Something wrong with base of cat’s tail!

Hi, I am so worried about my cat. She is only holding her tail partially up and seems to have a bumpy shape just above it on her back, where her tail meets.
I have a vet appointment booked later on this afternoon, but can anyone offer reassurance please?
She is eating and jumping up on the bed etc. Does anyone know what it could be?

Almost certainly a cat bite abscess, which is generally painful but usually straightforward to treat. Definitely go to the vet!

Does she go outside? My cat had similar a few months ago and it was a bite wound from another cat (he gets in quite a few fights). Vet gave antibiotics and pain relief and it settled within a week.

One of my cats had this a few years ago - it was a bite that had become infected. The vet gave her an antibiotic injection and it healed very quickly, tail completely back to normal afterwards.

I came on the say bite abscess, they are often on the tail as they are delivered when the bitee is running away
Hope your cat is ok

All checked and no evidence of a bite, no temperature and she wasn’t flinching on being examined. Phew! Thanks all.

Glad she is OK! What a beautiful girl. Is she carrying her tail normally now?

Gorgeous girl!

ProsyFossil · 12/09/2026 08:27

She's beautiful!

Our vet used to call tail abscesses "the bite of shame" as it meant our cat was the one running away.

New cat is more prone to head wounds, as she's the one who started it.

She’s carrying it better than she was. The little asshole stuck it straight up in the air momentarily when she emerged from the carrier after the vet visit.
It’s such a relief to know that it is more likely to be a bite than a spinal injury.
There is a neighbouring cat who likes to come into Bandit’s territory and attack. He’s a pain in the arse and shouldn’t even be like that as he is a ragdoll. Lovely boy with humans, with poor Bandit, not so much.
Thank you all, crazy cat posse!
