Letting Mau outside?

Adopted an Arabian Mau a few months ago. He has a catio but he's very bored with that already and is desperate to explore further. We don't have means to make a bigger catio and we are unable to secure the garden due to many trees around the perimeter. Has anyone let their mau out? I feel like hed been much happier! Just looking for anyone that has done this.

My Egyptian Mau goes outside. I started to let him out after he'd had his vaccinations. We don't have a busy road nearby though. He hardly came into the house during the heatwave (just for food and a cuddle). He's great company during outdoor jobs but doesn't wander as far now that he's getting older. He used to love helping with the horses even in the snow (he's a bit small in the photo, but you can see him to the left of the hay piles).

I think it depends on what's around you. @SilverMau's location looks perfect in terms of space but a Mau in a more urban setting could be a nightmare. Not just in terms of danger to the cat, but also because Maus can take over a neighborhood - duffing up other cats and killing wildlife. We have a Catio for Marvin and quite frankly I don't care if he's a bit bored, it's better than nothing and the best solution for everyone else! You can also up his stimulation in other ways - so lots of cat trees and toys plus bird feeders so that he has plenty of things to focus on.

I have two and they sre both outdoor cats. My girl isn't aggressive at all, not a hunter but loves lurking in neighborhood gardens. My boy has a good sized territory but doesn't appear to fight often, I suspect the size of him probably deters others i would recommend a tracker

We have a tracker for him and going to try to start some training for coming when called for food etc! Thanks all.

I was about to say “he’s grown a bit in photo 2”, then spotted him 😀

You are so lucky! I would love a non territorial peace loving Mau instead of Genghis Khan in a fur coat!

It's a game of 'spot the mini snow leopard'! 😆

I highly recommend pairing a sound, something like a bell, with treats. If the bell is rung they MUST have a treat and if they have a treat the bell MUST be rung. It helped us so many times when Mewler seemed to have disappeared

I’ve started letting my Birman outside recently. Got a tractive collar for him and would really recommend it.

He’s lovely, cats are brilliant.

My boy comes when called, and when I call his sister too 🤣 Think he's nosy and wants to see what's she's being offered.
