British Shorthair kittens - one or two?

We’re just at the very beginning of our search for a new kitten after our last old dog died a few months ago.
So far we’ve settled on British Shorthair kittens. I know the usual advice is to get two, but apparently this breed are quite independent and don’t necessarily need a sibling.
So we’d be really grateful for any BSH owners and what
their advice would be.

We have a male, he's 3 now, he follows us everywhere, he trills when he sees us, we play with him about half an hour a day, he hates other cats and growled at his sibling.

I would always get two kittens.

We got one and he is fabulous. Sociable and fun. Two are lovely but not strictly necessary unless your house is empty a lot. I wfh and DD at uni so he has lots of company on and off during the day

Cat tax

I have two BSH cats 18 months old now, brother & sister. No regrets at all, they are so bonded, play together, sleep near each other, wash each other. It’s so sweet seeing them. I think getting siblings you are far more likely to end up with cats who are bonded. I’ve found non related cats, especially different ages, it’s very hit & miss if they get on, & most just end up tolerating each other.
I’ve had cats most of my life, many different breeds, & I’ve found that BSH cats want to be always near us, & follow us around the house. Not very independent actually compared to some other breeds. They aren’t lap cats but want to sit by us. Every day one of us says how glad we are that we got two. I do find kittens do love another kitten to chase & attack, & by getting litter mates they will be in the exact same development stage. It’s so much fun to watch them. At first they were definitely comfort for each other in a strange new home. I’ve had solo cats many times over the years, but seeing the bond between my two, I’d never ever get a single kitten ever again.

Why BSH? Only because they are hugely popular and there are some healthy breeds that desperately need support so they don’t disappear!

Most kittens do love a LOT of play. Our 7 month old is quite exhausting at times and the older cats share her energy out between them 🤣

I would suggest a sibling pair and a decent breeder would usually offer a discount on buying two.
