Update on lost cat so sad

Cat experts, I need your help! You may have seen my thread about my missing cat. I think I might have found him, but can’t get him!
Outing info following.
I live in a tenemented area of Edinburgh. There are drying greens arrached to most stairs, most of which are locked with residents only keys. Most of these have fences between them and also fences separating from street or greens behind.
However, the row of greens I think my cat is in while having fences between each other are entirely blocked off at all ends by walls so the only way out is through the door to the stair.
Following a tip off today, I gained access to a garden and could hear my cat yowling. I was shaking crunchies and he was yowling back, but whenever I got close he nipped into another garden and yowled from there. Most of them are very overgrown so I never actually saw him, just followed the yowls but having to leave one stair and gain access to another meant I wasn’t quick enough.
I have gone back and left my name and number in every stair, and shouted in any garden I could get access to, but nothing yet. I plan to go back this evening.
All this is a long winded way to give background to my question, how do I catch him if he won’t come to me? I went back with tuna this afternoon, but no sign nor sound.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

So sorry, but at least you know he is around. Can you get advice from somewhere like the RSPCA or equivalent, maybe they can lend you some sort of humane trapping cage?

Scrabsqueak · 18/08/2026 16:31

Oh, that’s a good shout! Thank you

Ask a local rescue for help to trap him.

HatStickBoots · 18/08/2026 18:14

What a relief to find him! I hope all goes to plan and you’re reunited soon. What agony you must be going through!

MyLuckyPeachOtter · 18/08/2026 18:32

I think Cats Protection might be more use than SSPCA but both def worth a try. There’s the Edinburgh Cat & Dog Home and Lothian Cat Rescue and also quite a few FB groups for lost pets in Edinburgh that might be able to help with catching him. Good luck!!!

Another fruitless hour spent hearing but not seeing him. I hope it is him and I’m not trying to track down someone else’s cat who lives there. I will phone cat protection etc tomorrow, I was too late today. Am meeting some lovely neighbours though!

Local rescue said SSPCA, who said local rescue. Am currently sitting in garden where he was seen last night with his bedding and tuna.

Good luck! A friend of mine finally tracked down their missing cat after months, and did similar to you but it took several goes to grab him, so don't give up. He was apparently very frit but as soon as they got him home, he went to his bowl and reverted back to normal

Scrabsqueak · 19/08/2026 18:11

Oh @CatGuardian , I so hope so. I went up to flats where he is today, but there wasn’t even any sound from him. Been twice, going back after dark tonight. I was so hopeful this morning and just feel despondent again tonight.

HES BACK!
He was not for getting in his basket but with the help of my raincoat and a few nasty scratches along the way I was able to get him in!
Thank you everyone for your kind and supportive comments!

NOW KEEP HIM IN! I now have 7. Five of them used to go outside. I did have 9. My youngest (less than 2 years old) was killed by a car, my 8 were
immediately house cats. I lost my oldest to old age. I torture myself that I let my youngest out and I lost him so it’s my fault. I’d give anything to have them both back. Losing both cut me very deep when each happened. I really would give anything to have them back home safe with me.

Pudmyboy · Yesterday 13:10

Congratulations @Scrabsqueak ! How are you both doing today? Does he need a bath? Do you need a tetanus jab?😹
And a polite reminder that cat tax is now due...

Glad he's back where he belongs :)

Get an apple air tag for his collar so you can track him, I pay for a stupidly expensive petTracer collar and app and it’s rubbish so save your money! It’s nice to check on your phone and see where they are, a real peace of mind!

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · Yesterday 14:02

Aww another Cheddar on the litter tray. My Cheddar was the best cat that ever lived! She managed to escape once and I found her on the next street, in a garden. Fortunately she came out when I called her. I got some funny looks walking down the road holding her very tightly. 🤣🤣 (she was an indoor cat)

Crazycatlady202020 · Yesterday 14:14

I'm so happy that Cheddar is home 😊

HatStickBoots · Yesterday 17:17

Awww he’s so gorgeous and looks so relieved to be home now! ❤️
