Looking after cat with diabetes

Our 17 year old cat has just been diagnosed with diabetes. We're talking to the vet on Monday about treatment which is most likely going to be twice daily injections. Just wondered how other people had managed their cat's diabetes and if they had any helpful advice on keeping them well and comfortable.

Not cat but dog. You need to be meticulous with injections. Food was difficult, I don’t know about cat food but you need a low amount of fat, and I know they can be fussy. We had to muzzle when we went out because he would eat anything he could. Does cat go outside alone - I’d be nervous about that.

Luckily she's not fussy with her food. She is always hungry and always eats enthusiastically. In recent years we've started getting much better quality food, so she's already on high protein, low carb food. I'm not sure of the fat content though!

She does go outside but stays in the garden. What would make you nervous about her being outside? Would it be wandering off and falling ill?

Thanks for the tip about the insulin! Not looking forwards to the bills. She's not insured. This is the first time I ever remember her being ill, so I suppose we've been lucky.

I found it pretty easy looking after our cat with his diabetes. I got the pen type insulin jobs and when he started to eat I would gently get a little pinch of skin on his scruff and pull it to a tent shape, then quickly inject into that. I’m not sure he even noticed.

That's good to hear. I'm worried about stressing her out with the injections.

My cat wasn’t that bothered by the injection, it wasn’t that bad, the only stressful thing is being strict with the timing
