Cat dental recovery

Poor Louie-Boo has had two canine teeth out and a scale and polish. He’s home now and very sorry for himself - wobbly, huge pupils, droolly. We’ve been told soft food (which he doesn’t like, he prefers dry) and no out for a fortnight, and he has both ABs and painkillers. How long is he likely to be spaced out from the GA, does anyone know? My poor little poppet 😭

He’s not camera ready at the moment so here’s a photo from last week.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses oh bless him. I think (as a veteran of weird poo issues with both of mine) the lack of poo is maybe because he's eating less and/or the meds might be making everything, erm, less solid? Hope one appears soon though.

Missed your post just before my last one, he is a handsome orange presence with elegant little white gloves🧡 and I'm so sorry about your other girl 💔they wiggle their way right inside our hearts don't they?

But I do have wonderful mental images of him raiding the kitchen, and it's been a mostly stressy day, so thank you for that! Fingers toes and paws crossed he eats, poos and is allowed out supervised after Monday checkup.

@hilariousnamehere still no poo - I emailed the vet and they are prescribing some laculose (?) which will no doubt be another £50. This has been an expensive week. In terrible timing we’d agreed to have MIL’s cat on a temp to perm basis because she’s sold her house and is yet to find somewhere and is moving in with other family short term. So he arrived yesterday and we have him in the spare room being all hidey and hissy, and Louie desperate to get in there to see what’s going on.

fridsy update is: He’d eaten all his food overnight, and is clearly bored out of his little orange brain - DP heard a noise last night and found him up on top of the kitchen cupboards. Here he is this morning - I teach so am off work at the moment and we have been enjoying a cuddle/scroll/cup of tea in bed situ most days.

Thanks for asking @30birthdaygirl Today’s update is that he’s eating with gusto, and has done a poo! So fingers crossed his mouth is healing well when we bring him in to be checked on Monday and he can regain some outside access with supervision. He’s bouncing off the walls (literally) being kept in. Usually in winter if he’s out less I play with him a lot, but he tends to favour wand toys and things like ribbons and shoelaces which I don’t want him having in his mouth just now.

Very glad to hear he's finally had a poo! One less thing to worry about.

Difficult keeping doors and windows shut in the warm weather too. Sympathies! Hopefully not too much longer now.

I know - we have a utility with a “middle door” between the kitchen and back door which helps, but 9/10 times he’s poised on the counter by the kettle waiting to charge. He did escape into the garden on Friday but was easily captured straight away. He doesn’t really roam so I’m optimistic the vet will grant some freedom tomorrow!

I'm so glad he pooed! (The things we don't know we'll be delighted about when we get cats!) I hope vet goes well tomorrow and he gets a pass to some freedom as it sounds like he wants to go out whether he's medically ready or not!

Crikey my darling girl had all her teeth out, had metacam for two days, slept for the first day, ate her soft food as usual, was using the cat flap on day three and back on biscuits on day 4.

Caveating that by saying she likely had calici virus as a kitten which played havoc with her teeth and gums and according to the vet the teeth were almost coming out on their own.

@hilariousnamehere I know, right? I didn’t do the lactulose again after Saturday’s enormous poo, and he didn’t go again yesterday so I gave him a dose last night. The bottle said something about “until normal stools” but I’m not sure what that means. Will ask the vet tonight.

@TheyGrewUp our previous cat had a bunch of teeth out and was back to normal within a couple of days activity-wise, but I think this is to do with his stitches. His painkillers and antibiotics are done tomorrow. Maybe our vet is just very cautious. That said I had a big back tooth out years ago that needed a second dentist to come in and help, and I had to be sutured up afterwards (my teeth have big curly roots apparently) and recovery was a lot!

@hilariousnamehere thanks for asking. His gums are healing well but the vet was concerned they were a bit red and possibly heading towards infection so we have another five days of AB to do. But the good news is he’s allowed out! She wasn’t worried about him hurting the stitches now, just that he would disappear for days and miss his medication. He doesn’t really roam beyond immediate neighbours, and is kept in overnight so we’re all good and he’s much happier.

We have a second checkup next week - they do five and 14 days - and I am hoping after that he can get back to biscuits. The vet said to stick to soft food until then.

He did a happy dance, then went straight off to hang out with his pal from next door. Annoyingly it says that photo is too big to post, but it was so cute to see them rub noses!

Does anyone want this? His crimes? Breaking and entering (next door) and theft (next door’s cats’ biscuits). Our neighbour evicted him quickly and was very apologetic knowing he’s supposed to be on a soft diet. (Obviously not his fault!)

Oh wait, it gets better. I just came in from a reformer class to find him in amongst chicken defrosting on the side. He’s really in disgrace today.

Just coming back to this thread to say we’ve had the final vet check today and we’re all good! She said to keep him on wet food for another few days as he’s one suture still healing, but doesn’t want to see us again.
