Has anyone else had a cat diagnosed with this?

Finally I have a diagnosis for my 16 year old cat.
She has hayfever.
The poor girl had an absolutely miserable spring with running eyes and a very runny nose and was quite distressed.
The vet reminded me I'd brought her in for "eye infections" for the last few years and she'd had antibiotics with no effect. She's had a steroid injection and some steroid eyedrops and she's a new cat!!
I've had 10 cats previously and none of them have had hayfever, I didn't know it was a cat thing.
Has anyone else had this?

could you please tell me what her symptoms have been?

gorgeous kitty btw!

Thanks. She had very messy wet eyes with lots of gunge at the corners. Her left eye seemed worse than the other one and her poor nose was very wet and runny too with wet sneezing.
It looked like an eye infection.
Bless her she looks completely normal today. I tried her eyedrops in one of my eyes and they do sting a fair bit so she isnt keen.

Not a cat, but I had a horse with hayfever! We had to swap an entire field of bales of hay with someone else who'd bought a field's worth of a different type of grass.

Poor thing - she poked her head over the door & her face looked like a hippo!

My dog had it as a puppy. I thought he had a grass seed or something up his nose but the vet took one look at him and said nope it’s hayfever.
He had trouble all his life with his feet, they were so itchy bless him from grass so keep an eye out for that as well.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/06/2026 19:53

Yes. I think in the late Magic had it. But it was truly to tell as she was a Persian who always had gunky eyes. I used to give her 1/4 of a tablet of piriton on the vets advice.

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/06/2026 19:56

I was chatting to someone whose cat had hay fever & he said he’d been advised to try Piriton too.

TheCurious0range · 18/06/2026 19:57

My parents' dog had hayfever! Vet advised piriton I think they used to use a liquid form

my friends neighbours dog had a grass seed allergy and had to wear dog boots to stop his paws flaring up. wee soul.

One of mine is allergic to so many things that she has her own tailor-made injectable immunotherapy. Sighhhhh.

Yes one of mine gets watery eyes and itchy skin that results in scabs and hairless all over his head. Every summer. Fine the rest of the year. Vet says it is hay-fever.

On the plus side, she is the only cat we've had that DS is not allergic to!

Oh my god I thought you said one of my mice 😂. Now that would be going above and beyond.

OP you are a lovely cat mum to test her eye drops in your own eyes!😻
