Garden proof to keep cat in- how?

My poor cat got hit by a car this week, if he pulls through I want to garden escape proof and keep him away from the road. Can anyone recommend anything please?

If you Google cat proof garden you will get images of the kind of thing you can attach to fences, some can also be erected from the ground up if you don’t have fences to attach them too -they are expensive though.

Is a large catio an option? So sorry, I hope he pulls through (not sure how I missed that but!) . I know what a worry it is. Flowers

I hope your kitty pulls through, I’m so sorry that happened! Purrrfect fence, you can either buy from them and erect it yourself or pay to have them erect it for you.

do you have six foot fences all round?

if so, you just add an overhang.
if not you’d be better making a catio with mesh panels.

I have 6 foot fences all round so could do those wire overhangs like the zoo, or I’ve seen spinning things which the cat can’t grab on to. They are less ugly but I wonder if they are as effective

Have a catio built, only way to guarantee he’s safe

Catio

rockstarshoes · 27/05/2026 21:44

We did the overhang brackets! No escapes! We do have a regular walk round just check everything is ok!
We lost a cat & no way was I ever going to lose another!

This happened to our cat (she survived!) We didn't do anything different to the garden, she just seemed to become more wary as a result.and doesn't go far.

I have the poles from Katzecure - I really rate them. They have been very effective but are more expensive than the netting. I only have a small garden, so didn't want it to look too prison like! If I'd had a bigger garden it might not have been affordable. But it depends on your budget really.

Tiptopflipflop · 27/05/2026 21:54

We originally had the spinning poles from Katzecure, and my very agile boy figured out how to escape. The lazy one wasn't able to though. We replaced with Securacat which was much better and wasn't as visible as we expected. No escapes from that.

We got right handled brackets from screwfix and bent them to shape - then put netting over , we also built a catio with a cat flap into it. Relatively cheap and the cats seem happy.

Thanks all. We is very agile so I do wonder if he could escape the spinning poles. Is rather he had the whole garden than just a catio, he loves the garden
