Micro chip catflap no longer working

Our catflap is about 12 years old, so I had assumed we needed a new one. The batteries have been replaced.

I was looking at reviews on pets at home and they're all quite rubbish. So I wondered if it's worth getting a new one or if there could be another issue, if the chip in the cat is no longer working or has migrated. Any ideas? Don't really want to fork out for a new catflap and to get it fitted if it's not likely to work

Mine has never worked. Not as far as the cat is concerned anyway. If I wave a chip sans cat at the flap it clicks and registers even from about 2ft away. The chip is still in the cat, at the top of the neck and is picked up by the vet easily. So no idea why the cat flap can’t see the cat’s chip. Maybe my cat has a fat neck 🤷‍♀️😆

Have you still got the spare tag, thats designed to be worn on a collar? We have ours on a soft toy that's programmed into the app as Test Cat, so is useful for determining whether it's the cat or the cat flap.

We've had these cat flaps forever now and they're invaluable for stopping other cats invading your house, I wouldn't be without it, even if they are a bit glitchy.

Is it a Sureflap? If so, they have good customer service so give them a call tomorrow and see what they suggest.

But it could be that the microchip has migrated and can't be read by the flap. If you visit your vet they can check where it is.

If it isn't a Sureflap, that is what I'd recommend. We've had ours for ten years and haven't had any problems with it.

Thanks all. I don't think we ever had a spare tag. I'm a bit stumped

We have a Sureflap, no issues with it reading either of our two cats chips...
I would be checking that the chip hasn't moved before replacing the flap.
Or try resetting it...

When we had our dog her chip moved from her neck to the side of one shouider, didn't really matter with her being a dog but might make a difference to the flap for a cat.

have you tried reprogramming the cat into the catflap? I've bought 3 sureflap ones over the last few years and all still work perfectly. (I have spoilt cats who can come in the back door, front door or into the summerhouse if they so choose)

Sureflap are great, my last one died at 10 years old, wouldn’t hold charge, new one great

Yes agree with the comment that Sureflap customer services are great. Mine wasn’t working, and then sent me a video showing how to clean a cog-thingy in it. I removed about a tonne of cat-hair and it worked again!
