Can anyone help me work out this cat wee smell?

Today while I’ve been sat on the sofa, I keep getting whiffs of cat pee. I have sniffed every inch of downstairs and can’t find where it’s coming from. It’s not the litter trays because they are upstairs. When I’m near the sofa I can smell it. The closer to the sofa, the stronger the smell. But there’s no wet patches and when I sniff up close I can’t locate it.

why is this so hard to find? Also my cats have never done this before in their lives

This may sound absolutely crazy, but could it be a pair of trainers? 🙈 I had a strong smell of cat wee in my car& didn’t have a cat. Turned out it was my exs football trainers 🤮

It's lovely to look at but stinks like cat pee.
When my DSIL gave birth to my Nephew in1974 it was May bank holiday so no shops open in those days. My mum had lots of beautiful garden flowers, blossoms etc so we took a huge bunch into the hospital when we visited her and the baby. After about 10 minutes in a very warm ward we all smelled the smell never to be forgotten and the pretty but stinky foliage was promptly chucked out.
Nephew is over 50 now and has probably been reminded on every birthday of his aunt and uncle Maras' pongy pressie.

Some kinds of plastics can give off a cats-wee kind of smell when very hot. Check any electrical plugs, power adaptors, light sockets etc near your sofa.

Could it be a dead mouse? I had this and there was one under a low storage unit. So the cat was definitely to blame but for a different reason!

Under the sofa? We had this - strong lingering smell, couldn't locate it. In desparation we moved the sofa. Goodness knows how he managed to pee under it....bloody cat!

I had exactly the same issue. It was some plastic insoles in my shoes. They’d got wet.

I totally empathise with you although I don't have the answer. I have a cat and have had this a few times over the years. So bloody frustrating.
