My little monster is a fussy eater. We have cycled through just about every brand and I have wasted a fortune throwing out dish adapter dish of untouched wet food.

As a treat I gave her some plain fish - she loved it and ate it all up. She knows it comes from the freezer and scraps at the freezer while looking in disgust at their normal food!

I know she needs a balanced diet and can’t live of fish. She will also east sliced roast chicken if that’s on offer! She is driving me batty and has become very vocal - particularly in the early hours. Because I think she is hungry - but there is lots of food out for her - just not up to her standards. She gets fish once a day and roast chicken twice a week!

anyone else manage to feed a very fussy cat?

My girl gets like this too. If she gets some fish cooked for her she will then refuse to eat anything else for days. She will wake me up in the night licking my face and head butting me, I’ll go downstairs in case there’s an empty biscuit bowl emergency, but usually the bowl is full and she wants me to cook her fish in the middle of the night.

it’s like living with a little furry dictator. I don’t think there’s a solution unfortunately! 😂

Pardon my ignorance, but what is missing from a diet of fish? Cats are obligate carnivores, so what is missing? Unless they need a whole (entire) fish so can eat the skin and so forth?
Genuine question!

like people, cats need a variety of nutrients. Fish don’t have them all.

The advice I always understood was fish is a healthy treat but can’t be the sole diet of a cat.

My lady is 4.5 years old. She has never ate cat food or cat treats. We have her since she is 8 weeks. Her main food is chicken. She also likes fish, cheese triangles, slices of ham and cheese slices. We give her a taurine supplement everyday and she drinks milk with taurine too. She has her yearly check up with the vet and she is healthy. Her coat is also fantastic. Vet is not worried about her diet. The taurine is very important though.

What supplement do you use - and does it impact the Flavour of the food? My fussy little princess turns her nose up at most things!

My fussy cat seems to prefer the fish in gravy varieties wet pouches.

I read that cats get bored with the smell and that puts them off eating. My cat loves the licky stix, so now I put a small squirt of that on top of her fresh food.

I also give her only half a pouch at a time - ie

Cats get really ill on a fish only diet.

I think chicken has all the nutrients needed

OP will your cat eat scrambled egg or boiled egg?

Have you tried Gourment natures creations cat food? One of my cats will only eat fish but he’ll accept the ocean fish from that brand. It’s a complete food and often sold in single cans so easy to try.

Geneticsbunny · 20/05/2026 08:54

Red bull has taurine in it... Can you imagine how bonkers a cat would be on energy drinks! (obviously dont actually feed a cat energy drinks)

Weirdly she won’t eat any fish flavored cat food. Only real fish. She drives me bonkers.

she likes the lik-e-like but licks them off the top of the food then leaves the food.

Mine likes Untamed - there is troublingly little difference between it and the tinned fish I eat myself! Not quite the same as freshly cooked fish though.
