Second bout of cystitis - back to back.

My new cat has recently finished a 10 day course of Gabapentin for stress-induced cystitis and during this time she was also having Purina wet and dry food for urinary tracy health. During this time she was weeing fine and so we thought that things would continue to be ok. We also introduced a Feliway infuser to the room she spends most of her time in.

Anyway, the medication course finished 48 hours ago but this morning I’ve woken up to a large puddle of ruined outside her litter box with lots of blood in it, and now she’s pacing around the house trying to wee with nothing coming out.

Can things really deteriorate this quickly within 48 hours of stopping the Gabapentin?

I feel so disheartened ☹️

Either shes needs more meds or i would ask for a stomach scan as mine had 2 rounds of meds for cystitis one after the other with no improvment.

Following the scan sadley hers was more serious.

I wish i had asked for stomach scan following the first lot of meds.

Hopefully yours will improve with more intervention.

Thank you for your response.

We got her and her sister from a rescue centre almost a month ago and the vet thinks it’s all related to her being re-homed and the stresses that come with that. She and her sister came from a very neglectful background so it’s been a big upheaval for them, we are their fourth home in less than 3 months. It also coincides with her recently being allowed outside so being exposed to a new environment and other cats in the area etc.

I took a urine sample to the vets the morning that I initially posted and there was no sign of any crystals (not sure what relevance that is) and there was no infection, so he says it’s all stress related. He has provided us with another course of Gabapentin and this time he has also given me another medicine for her to take once every 24 hours which is a pain relief (I can’t recall the name of the drug off the top of my head).

Within 24 hours things improved in that although shes still only weeing small amounts and visiting her tray frequently there is no longer any blood so we are happy with that and will see how things progress.

What was it that your cat’s scan showed?

Lovely that you gave her a home.
Same with mine she was a stray.
Was very nervous at first but so loving.

She developed the same symptoms at age 10 or 11 they said it was probarly stress related cystitis so I assumed it was

( although she had not had it for the years prior to it when she was really nervous )

She had 2 rounds of meds and pain relief at the end of the first round i thought she had improved a bit but it continued so 2nd lot of meds / pain given.

It was found she had a large mass in her stomach.
Fingers crossed for you
