Any ideas on improving Penelope’s table manners.

She’s always been a messy eater, but it’s worse since having all her teeth out. Wet and dry food all over the tray and bits on the mats round the tray. I’ve tried plates, shallow bowls, tilted raised bowls, etc. But nothing works.

No idea at all I'm afraid. My lot are a bunch of messy herberts despite still having teeth. 🤣
Sybil enclosed after cleaning out my shredded wheat bowl.

She’s so cute 🥰 but yeah I think without teeth she’s doomed to being a messy eater. I think lots of cats are messy? My girl grabs a chunk of food from her dish and then puts it on the floor to chew on 🥴

likelysuspect · 17/03/2026 18:47

Mine's the same and has her full teeth

Food dragged out way past the 'feeding mat', up the stairs, on the carpet, a bit here, a bit there.

No other cat I’ve ever known is as messy as Pen. My friends cats are very dainty!

Magic used to do that on my long piled rug 😂 Fortunately she wouldn’t eat wet food.

When we had our last two kittens, we tried every bowl we could think of to stop them making a mess of the floor - round, square, oval... some sort of Ikea troughs...

Eventually we realised they were taking it out of every bowl deliberately so they could eat it on the floor... 🙄 We were just making more of an interesting game out of it...

@GribouilleI completely feel
your frustration. The cat shelf is stacked with things that haven’t helped.

I showed my mum the photos of adorable Pen, and she suggested that you hand-feed her with a spoon!🤣
Sounds like she's being cheeky, you say...well, she is sincere..she did that with my little black pug when I first got her.🤣 Grandmothers...gotta love 'em.

I am not spoon feeding her! She’s at the cattery and they’ve posted some very imperious photos.

Oh how gorgeous!
My 19 month old cat spits her food onto the mat from her bowl then eats it.. sadly she does have juvenile gingivitis which may be genetic/ due to an immune condition and needs a dental soon.. she’s 3/4 ragdoll & 1/4 Persian.

@Lararoftthink Penelope had that. She had 6 teeth out when she was three. And all of them
out last November, she’s only 5! But it’s absolutely been the making of her. She’s a different cat. Much happier, bossy, and confident.
