Does your cat attack you when you try to move him/her?

This is a question purely out of curiosity!

My cat is very gentle and has only ever scratched me once, which was when I put her into the basket to bring her to her new home with me. Even when she's had enough of being fussed she will gently place her paw on my arm rather than hurt me.

Last night I'd put a velvet throw on my bed but when I was ready to get into the bed my cat had claimed ownership of it. I gently put my hands under her to give her a warning, then moved her away. She was angry and yowled and while she didn't scratch, I thought for a second she was going to. She clearly really liked the throw!

It got me wondering what you do if you need to move a cat? Do you chuck a towel over them or just leave them be?

I leave them be!

Ours are very good and happy with being picked up, but if they’re settled we just work around them. I’ll sleep at any angle possible to avoid moving a ball of snoozing fur!

Twelvetimes · 25/01/2026 14:03

None of my cats has ever done this. If I want to move them I don't think twice about it. If they are asleep I stroke them gently to 'say hello', then pick them up. None of them ever grumble.

I often have to move them simply because they are sleeping in 'my' seat on the sofa! (obviously, they think it is their seat, but I disagree!)

Are you sure she isn't ill or in pain?

I would have gently lifted the throw and kind of tipped her off .

No she's fine and healthy! She was half asleep and comfy and just really didn't want to be moved.

Yes the benefit of hindsight. I trust my cat but next time it's the better option.

My cat is intensely loving and affectionate with me to the point of clinginess, but she takes it VERY badly if I try and move her when she is comfortable. I try to avoid disturbing her as much as possible, I’m sure I’d feel the same if I was warm and comfy and sleeping, and some giant creature came along and moved me without my consent!

vanillaskin · 25/01/2026 14:14

I just pick him up and he stays in his prawn shape until I plonk him down somewhere else

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 25/01/2026 19:13

No - ours gets picked up and moved into the kitchen at bedtime every night. He’s pretty fly and often goes and lies on our bed when he hears me start brushing my teeth, but he accepts his banishment in good part, knowing he’s an utter pest if we leave him in bed with us.

Just keep an eye out in case she has a sore spot and you touched it.

She's fine, I'm always picking her up for a cuddle when she's standing around or walking about. She just didn't want to be moved from the comfy throw.

Yep. I’ve got 3 cats and my male has been like this from the moment we brought him home at 12 weeks. He’s 4 now but always been a bellend

goodnightssleepbenice · 25/01/2026 20:53

Yep my cat attacks on a daily basis , often for no reason , he jumps out at us and sinks his teeth in our ankles , he is an absolute delight 😂

mondaytosunday · 25/01/2026 20:53

They may meow in protest but no they’ve never scratched or bitten. I usually just put gentle pressure on their side and they move of their own accord.

That’s reminded me of the time I took my old cat to the vets as “I stroked him and he looked at me like he wanted to bite me” (this cat didn’t know how to bite!)
the vet was Confused and picked him up just as a huge hidden abscess on his shoulder burst

TheCurious0range · 25/01/2026 22:19

My cat bites me most days, sometimes gently sometimes not, for all kinds of reasons. He also lays in wait on the landing looking through the bannister and bats DH on the head when he comes up the stairs, no one else just him. He's very gentle with ds though.

99pwithaflake · 26/01/2026 17:37

The only time it's ever happened was when our old cat was in pain with arthritis which we didn't realise at the time.

Otherwise I can pick them up and move them whenever I want without an issue -they may miaow in protest but they'd never attack.
