My mother's cat has suddenly died today. He was about 10 ( was rescue so exact age not know). Not Ill was healthy bright eyed eating and usual self then suddenly screaming in pain and collapsed. Vet said heart attack likely. She didn't have time to get him to emergency vet even. She is so so upset.
The dogs devastated. ( cat and dog were very close)
She is alone and her dog and cat are / were a complete support system.
No point to this thread really.
Just cats are so important and loved by owners what do you do when they die? How does the dog cope without his cat overlord?
I struggled so badly when I last lost a cat I couldn't even last 3 months before I went and got a new cat . I feel awful to say this but I did find that helpful.

I am so sorry, see how she is over the next few weeks. Take care of your mum and also yourself OP.
She isn't alone, she has you, her lovely daughter xx

So sorry for your mum, that just have been quite awful to experience Flowers

I waited less than a week the last 2 times I lost a cat. Knowing there were cats in rescue when I had space and the emptiness of a catless home meant I couldn't wait. Both times felt serendipitous as the cats turned out fabulously.

I'm so sorry to read this. 🥹Thinking of you both and poor doggy too. Take care

Oh I’m so sorry for the loss of this much loved cat. The poor dog will pine for a while as did our little cat when his brother died suddenly ❤️💐

We had a cat who died similarly - walking up the path normal as you like, then one horrendous yowl and collapsed. We were utterly bereft by her death. I think you have to let the feelings come, hard as that is. We got new cats after about 6 months.

Very sad, it’s too soon but not the worst way to go for the cat. We have 4 they’ve all found us. The cat relocation programme will swing into action once she’s ready. I think cats are wonderful, nearly as much as they do. Did your dog get a chance a see her i believe it helps with grief?

So sorry Felin and sending love to you, your mum and her DDog Flowers

Thank you all.
Yes dog witnessed the whole thing and is visably very unset. He saw the body so knows cat died and hasn't abandoned him.
I visited today and the poor dog is so unsettled. They were very bonded.
Mother very upset , the cat really was so well cared for and loved. House doesn't feel right at all without him overseeing everything.
Vet has apparently been very reassuring about the death. Cat only had his health check just before Christmas where everything was fine so nothing was missed. Just apparently the way it can happen some times.
He at least died with his family present in a safe place. It could have happened when he was outside somewhere and then my mother may have also had the stress of a missing cat and not knowing what happened.
