Kitten chewing wires??!

Christmash · 20/12/2025 23:08

We have a maincoon mix kitten, she is 7 months old and as mad as a hatter.

All fun except for the fact she chews wires like a bloody rabbit.

She has chewed through 2 phone chargers, one set of christmas lights, one speaker wire and now my sons console charger.

Shes going to kill herself or cause a fire! Its absolutely impossible to hide ALL wired in the house from her and I'm not sure what to do??

Amazon cable covers, my cats are a year and a half now, and I still need them

HostaCentral · 20/12/2025 23:18

Definitely a phase she will grow out of, but in the meantime it's a pita, I agree. We had to buy new cables for so many things, and finally got rid of our tapped up Xmas lights this year, after many years of shorting out!

My girl Suki was obsessed with chewing wires, I did manage to hide them from her (her brother wasn't bothered at all!) I can have them out now, she's 2 in April and has grown out of wire chewing, thank God!

My Maine Coon still chews wires and he’s 3! I’ve had to buy cable covers for pretty much every cable or wire in the house. Kids are under strict instructions to NOT leave any cable or wires out (or anything like that in sight or in reach. He managed to wreck loads of different cables and charge leads until I got the covers. Even now, he tries to remove the bloody covers to get to the cables.

He’s a tosser who can open doors/cupboards/drawers, so things really do have to be hidden or way out of reach. But I love him, and he’s my baby. Good luck!!!

Me: Cats chewing wires? Not a problem here.

You need mesh cable covers. I have one who’s bitten through three sets of fairy lights and a speaker charger wire. She’s two now and I thought she’d outgrown the habit but the Christmas tree lights were clearly far too tempting. So back to the cable covers…

We bought these from Amazon. You can cut them to your preferred length with normal scissors and they take seconds to fit.

I have the same ones. I have covered every single cable/wire that we use in the house (that are accessible to the cats).

Amazon wires not arrived before she has bitten through the tree lights 😪

She is an absolute horror

Aww she's a gorgeous horror though! 😍

Astra53 · 24/12/2025 21:27

My friend's Maine Coon loved chomping on wires and got through a fair few. My other friends cat is part Bengal and has just destroyed the tree lights!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/12/2025 21:41

She's a gorgeous horror!

Our naughty tortie LOVES chewing wires and actively searches them out. She's 7 and yet to grow out of it.

DH has lost so many phone charging wires, the kids learned quickly to keep headphones safely stored, and our vacuum wire is very pitted - now covered.

Christmash · 24/12/2025 23:52

I didn't realise it was such a prominent thing in cats. I have had a few over my lifetime and never experienced it!

Amazingly, out of my cats (had 4, now 3) it’s only been Chewbacca (Chewie) that has been the one that chews wires. I have had to use that cable protector stuff on everything. He still tries to claw at it and get it off to get at the wires, but so far it has stayed on! He will also chew phones, headphones, water bottle spouts etc. be warned….

FruitBadger · 25/12/2025 00:30

I had a cat that passed away aged 14 who never outgrew chewing wires, I had some very strange looks in the office when I had to explain he ate my work laptop charger 😳

He was checked by the vet, as he chewed many things. They suggested wrapping wires in tin foil, as many cats don't like it. Sadly didn't work for me, he ate through the foil, but an easy one to try? We did find that painting wires with the stuff used to stop nail biting was quite effective.

Oh dear. She is a very beautiful horror though.
