Why is it so nice to watch?

I don’t know but you’re so right ! Hadn’t realised how much I enjoy watching it. I think because they’re so busy and make such funny noises as they do it? Particularly chewing the toes 😁

murasaki · 30/11/2025 17:31

I'd rather they didn't wash their arses in front of me while I'm eating, but otherwise yes, it's quite soothing to watch.

DeanStockwell · 30/11/2025 17:32

It's baffling, all the odd positions they get into , I sometimes wonder if they will tie themselves into a permanent knot

largeprintagathachristie · 30/11/2025 17:35

They are so thorough!
It’s lovely- particularly the “behind the ears” bit.

PegDope · 30/11/2025 17:36

It’s ritualistic. So precise and targeted.

It’s quite calming.

Dilbertian · 30/11/2025 17:38

Oh yes, the little noises. MrCat gives little grunts that make him seem so satisfied with himself 😻

It's the way they are able to wash in-between their toes without shredding their wee tongues open with their nails!!

ThisIsMyKitty · 30/11/2025 17:40

One of her funny cleaning positions caught the other day

I love it when they lick their paws to wash their faces and heads - as if they've thought it out, I can't lick this bit but this is the next best thing.

Greenfinch7 · 30/11/2025 17:44

I think there is something about the dignity with which they do such inherently undignified acts.

The washing off the paws and between the toe beans, behind the ears, the displacement of the whiskers, best of all the forgotten pink tongue tip, the unconsciously inverted ear.

murasaki · 30/11/2025 17:57

I like it when my two, who don't always get on, wash each other. Sometimes the larger one gives the smaller a forcible bath, but she looks quite happy with his ministrations and returns the favour

Frenchfemme · 30/11/2025 18:06

Mine insists on coming to sit on me to start washing. Not always the most comfortable experience…

ConnieHeart · 30/11/2025 18:13

I find it funny that they can be trotting along quite happily then feel the sudden urge to lick their chest

murasaki · 30/11/2025 18:14

Dp gets very offended when he strokes Big Lionel and Lionel then decides he immediately needs to wash the bit that was stroked. I find it funny.

I actually love the sensation of mine washing herself on my lap. And hearing a quiet slurping when I wake in the night.

Gribouille · 01/12/2025 11:58

Oh, it's so absolutely meditative, isn't it? Mindfulness in action! I swear we get the vibes off them...

Conversely, when I try to meditate, my cat comes running from wherever she is to distract me... uncanny...

Yes mine does that. As if they suddenly need an emergency wash’ 😅

LillyLeaf · 01/12/2025 12:58

It's incredible how luxurious their fur is from simply washing themselves. I rarely need to brush my cat. She is so glossy. I, on the other hand need an array of hair products to pass as acceptable.

Ruffledfeather · 01/12/2025 13:01

I read that they learn how to do it by watching their mothers and that just melted my heart.

BillieWiper · 01/12/2025 13:03

My little cat loves licking and grooming. He licks my feet and sometimes my face! He likes cleaning his big brother who begrudgingly accepts a full wash but then it descends into a play fight! Yeah it's adorable to watch.

MichaelPortillosRedTrousers · 01/12/2025 13:04

One of ours only ever does his bum and one patch on the side he's not lying on - a patch where he doesn't have to lean too far, and it's literally a tongue width/length of wet and no more.

His sister will stop mid walk and rearrange her chest hairs but then she's got more than 1 brain cell.

lalaloopyhead · 01/12/2025 13:05

I must be a bad cat owner as I actually don't like it! I don't know if I have particularly slurpy cats but I find the noise quite irritating...

It's as if they were heading down the hall, then realise they've forgotten where they were going and feel a bit silly so they stop and wash themselves as if that was where they always intended to wash. A bit like when humans are walking along and realise they've turned the wrong way coming out of a shop and stop to look in a window so they can pretend it was deliberate.

Myblueclematis · 01/12/2025 13:12

I don't have a cat now and this is one of the things I miss seeing especially when they put one paw right over one ear or when they wash one of their paw pads and they stretch their toes out.

One of my cats, male, was a very reluctant washer and one of my female cats washed him all the time, bless her, he loved it the lazy blighter.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 01/12/2025 13:15

When they stop mid licking their arse, leg still in air and stare at you 😂
