Best litter for post surgery

My cat has to have surgery next week & will have to stay inside for 10 days after.
He’s not had to use a litter tray before, always uses the pumpkin patch at the bottom of the garden.
Could anyone recommend litter that clumps & doesn’t smell & how the hell I persuade him to use the litter tray?

We find the cheapest the best for clumping well (Asda Essentials). We have bought hugely expensive ones (£10+ and not found them as good). The secret to it not getting smell is to scoop clumps and lumps as soon as possible. They are also more likely to use a tray that is kept nice and clean.

He may be caged while at the vets with a tray in the cage - ask if he used it while he was there. If not you know he will be dying for a wee when he gets home.

I would get the litter tray down now - don't just let him come home to find it. I would also have a couple - one probably near the cat flap, but they do need to be in fairly quiet spots where they will be comfortable using it. Show him where they are and then start regularly putting him in the tray and gently scratch his paws in it to get him use to the idea. A couple of treats as a reward for using it may help!

Hope the operation goes will and it is not too traumatic for him.

Sprinkle a little of the soil he's peed on in the tray so he can smell his own scent in it. It helps them figure out what the tray is for.

I quite like cats best original litter. It clumps well and they stay whole even after a couple of days (though I try not to leave it that long).

My cats have 4 trays but mostly only use the one in my bathroom. They often come to the bathroom with me and pee when I do like a little family outing!
