Staying in whilst cold?

Have your cats taken to staying in during the day now temp has dropped?

My boy is usually out all day long, but has been pretty much solidly for the past two days. Unsure if hes feeling unwell or is just wanting to be in? He's eating normally but something feels off with him 🤔 i am a worrier though so unsure if its just me being me

Oh yes my cat hates the cold, she has barely gone out at all since the temps dropped.

We call our cats the barometers. They love being outside, but they definitely spend more time indoors once winter comes around, girl cat especially, boy cat has the most amazing thick coat so he just comes in for the occasional warm through.

DoraChance · 19/11/2025 17:25

Definitely - our cat is 6 now. For the first few years he was really hardy and wanted to be out in all weathers but now he’s matured a little he won’t go out when the temperature drops. In summer he’ll still be out all day long.

Jinxy1 · 19/11/2025 21:42

Definitely stays in more when it’s cold. He goes out, does the necessary then comes back in. The weather was so awful last week he used his tray under duress! During the summer he’s out all day.

Ours goes out. Comes back in and miaows in a very cross way. It really is like she’s telling us off for outside being too cold.

My boy is never in, he loves being outside. He's just been hanging of the door handle to go out, let him out and he lasted two minutes!

The girl hasn't been out for days, she just sleeps all day and night on my bed.

Blauehortensie · 19/11/2025 21:46

Definitely. The last two days she's been out for less than an hour, hates the cold. Will happily spend most of the day outside in summer.

Dancingfairydreams · 19/11/2025 21:47

Ha! These cats are something eh?! As if we can change the weather! He's ventured out for about an hour this evening but now back asleep! What hard lives these furry things have

We have a covered catio that they still enjoy, boy cat likes to stay in on his bed in the middle of the heated airer, he is a bit of a prissy boy though, girl cat likes to spy on the neighbours so will stay out for longer.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/11/2025 22:02

We have quite a bit of snow, our cat has not been over the door today. I’m giving him a lot more playtime with me to make sure he’s not bored as he’s usually out and in from dinner to bedtime.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 19/11/2025 22:08

Mine are older ladies now and have very little interest in going out in the dark, cold or wet. The cat flap is in winter mode (in only) and if they do come outside with me when I pop to the shed or bins, they either beat me back in or last about 5 minutes before the flap goes again. I’m currently trying to get into bed but they have spread out so there is not much room. No idea where DH is sleeping.

Dancingfairydreams · 20/11/2025 09:08

Turns out it wasn't cold enough! -3 here this morning & he's been out since 6am! 🙈

I do wonder if he was feeling under the weather (no pun intended!) but hes back demanding dreamies so guessing he's fine now!

Louie spotted next door’s cat on the wall and went charging out this morning. I could pretty much see his brain process the snow - you can clearly see that the footsteps do not extend far before being re-traced!

We also get told off for the cold! Not to mention the rain! Our boy will also walk away from the back door in disgust, then try leaving via the front door, in case its miraculously better out there! 😂
But in answer to your question OP, yes he's much more of a home body in the bad weather. I too was worried he was not feeling himself, but I think he's just fed up with the weather.

The Tabbies are divided on this:
The Siberian goes out when it is cold and dry, doesn’t matter how cold, she doesn’t do rain.
The junior tabby does a bit cold and is okay with rain, she does not do subzero temperatures.
The void never leaves the house in any circumstances as there are monsters out there.
