“Cats don’t have facial expressions”

Said my friend last night when I mentioned that Penelope was looking unusually smug. There was I thinking he was an intelligent adult. (He had two cats, one of whom definitely has expressions!)

This was my girl’s face the first time she saw a deer in the garden.

Little Tennyson was outraged by the rain earlier this week and flatly refused to go out. His expression said all too clearly that he was holding me responsible.

She’s highly intelligent. We taught her to ring a bell tied on to the front door handle when she wants to go outside!

I mean they do and they don't. They can't bend their features and screw their faces up in ways that humans can to express emotions. With a cat it's a combination of their eyes and their general physical demeanour.

I can tell if my cat is scared, upset, happy, wants something. But I doubt a stranger could. Especially If they don't have cats.

The one thing they can't really do is make their faces look ugly. For that I envy them.

I can absolutely tell that moment when it goes from ‘mmmmm, carry on tickling my tummy’ to ‘if you touch me again I will rip your hand to shreds’
