How to stop cat licking tail

My poor boy has 2 lacerations to the end of his tail. The vet thinks it was caught in a gate or something due to the wind. Luckily not broken.

They've glued him back together and gave him antis but his tail is freakishly long, so the vet didn't recommend a cone because it would be pointless.

He's obviously bothered by it and is worrying it. Is there anything I can actually do?

No experience of tails, but would suggest regular pain relief so they are less aware of any discomfort.
Have tried bandaging a cat leg in the past and you’d be amazed what they can yank off with their teeth and persistence.
Have had cats in the past who have got any cones off - which has ment they have licked wounds which seemed to have healed OK.
