Kitten & cat flap - help!

Kitten is 6 months old and has just started having supervised time outside in our enclosed garden with dcat who is 3. They both love being outside together and it’s an absolute joy to watch them playing. Dcat looks after his little brother and there are pitiful scenes when there’s nobody to supervise so kitten has to stay inside - one on each side of the patio door shouting!

The problem is that despite watching dcat go through the cat flap and spending lots of time trying to teach him, kitten just doesn’t get it. He is happy to go through it and once we push his head through the first bit to open the flap, he’s fine but can’t seem to understand he needs to push it with his head. He now paws at it, flapping it but still doesn’t get his head in! Over the week we’ve tried all the usual things with treats on the other side etc and literally spent 30 mins sat on the floor encouraging him to no avail. We’ve not even started on the process of coming back in through it yet and have to leave the door open which is getting problematic as it’s gone so cold.

Are there any tricks I’m missing?

In my experience, most of them get it eventually, just takes time. I’d close the flap, put a litter tray in the house away from the flap and let the cats get on with it.
