Cat missing outside in a hailstorm

We have just had the most awful hailstorm. Thirty minutes at least of dark skies, very loud thunder and lightning and prolonged heavy rain and bouncing hailstones.

My poor timid puss has never experienced anything like it and was outside through the whole thing. I called and called her but she didn't come running (not really surprised as the hail was awful).

The storm is over now though and she hasn’t come in. I thought she’s come running as soon as the rain stopped, but there is no sign of her. It’s been almost an hour. I’m so worried that she’s run away and got lost or injured somewhere.

Hopefully she’s hiding somewhere waiting to come out. I’m assuming you’ve rattled some treats to see if she hears though, mine have bat ears for Dreamies.

She will have found a car to hide under I think OP. This is what my cats do.

One of my cats was once out in a lengthy hailstorm, she was very timid too. Cats don't tend to rush back immediately after the scary thing has stopped because obviously they don't know if it's going to come back. They hide for a while afterwards.

My cat was actually at the bottom of the garden sheltering in the hedge, I saw her emerge later.

This happened to my cat recently. Doesn't normally leave the garden, she disappeared for 9 hours. Had half the neighbourhood out looking for her then she just turned up at midnight, a bit soggy but absolutely fine. Don't panic yet, she'll likely be back.

Thanks everyone. The sun has even come out now! I really really hope she’s just hiding somewhere. I’ve called her and shaken treats, but no sign. She’s not very good at coming when I call her at the best of times, but I thought she’d be desperate to come home after the fright she’s had.
She normally comes streaking inside when it rains.

Oh my goodness! I just went upstairs and she was sitting on the landing!! She’s been inside all along!! And there was me tramping around the sodden garden in the hail, calling her and shaking dreamies, and all the while she was hiding inside, safe and warm somewhere (goodness knows where!) I’m thrilled but also a bit mad 😹

😂I've done that before, searched everywhere outside and.... they're under the bed!

Ha ha, the amount of times I have called frantically for one of my cats, only for them to come sauntering out of the living room and scare the bejeesus out of me…. So glad you found her!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 08/09/2025 16:19

Oh brilliant, clever puss staying inside.

They love doing that and then looking at you like you’re mad “as if I would go out in THAT”
