Scented candles

We have had our kittens since the new year and this is our first autumn with them.

Am I able to get my beloved scented candles out?

I’m not worried about the safety aspect of them e.g. the cats knocking them over but more the scent? Are they safe for them to breathe?

I tend to avoid scented candles, even though I love them. The same with strong perfumes.
Certain ones can be toxic for cats- citrus oils, eucalyptus etc… Also they can irritate their respiratory system.
If I did have a candle on I think I’d just make sure it was well out of reach & ventilate the room lots so it’s not too overwhelming & overpowering. Cats have a such a strong sense of smell compared to humans.
Thank you so much for thinking about your kittens - it wouldn’t even occur to lots of people, & when they are exposed to toxins it can cause all sorts of health issues in cats that people experience & not even realise or make the connection that they’re caused by toxins in the home.

I use wax melts instead and Charlie is fine. The ones I use say they are safe for pets and I use an electric burner rather than tea light - not that I don't trust him of course!

I burn a candle on the mantelpiece every night - year round. It’s a big room and generally our cat is in and out to the garden of an evening rather than sat through there - although more likely to be in his bed by the radiator when it cools down and the heating is on! (He’s kept in overnight.) If I thought about it I would be more concerned about the constant use of Method spray on the kitchen sides because he won’t stay off them.

I burn scented wax melts every single day and have done for 6+ years - we have three cats and a dog and have never had a single issue with them. I use melts from a load of different companies and it's always been fine.
