Tracker collars - Tails and Furs

Feenie · 22/08/2025 09:41

Has anyone got any experience with these collars please?

https://tailsfurs.com/products/smart-tracking-collar-uk?variant=55555119219063

One of mine is an idiot and gets into all sorts of bother, so really needs something. Tractive worked brilliantly for just over a year and then he suddenly found out how to get the collars off and lost three very expensive ones in a row - and we could never find them again, so that was that.

They both have AirTags now which are alright - trying to work out whether these above are just AirTags as well and I should just save my money.

Any help welcome! Thanks.

Not of that one

but I honestly can’t more highly recommend the one I use - Tractive

Prob wouldn’t have my two adenaline explorers if I hadn’t got this!

if you use this referral link you get a discount but even if you decide against using the referral discount- I still highly recommend!!

Hi! I'm using Tractive to always know where my pet is. Use my link below to get 30% off a Tractive GPS tracker.

Not sure you read my post - I have used Tractive and loved it until my cat lost three collars in a row, the first was free to replace but the next two cost me £40 each. Then it dawned on me that if I couldn’t find the collars, they were a very expensive waste of time!

I use paw fit they are not collers they are like little batteries you attach to the coller. we live on a farm and one of them constantly in and out of ditches but she has never lost it. you have an app and can check exactly where he is

Marinel · 25/08/2025 14:54

Your cat is just as likely to lose the Tailsnfurs one as the Tractive, but I guess you're considering it because it's cheaper?

I have a Tabcat tracker which works really well, tracks accurately and I've used it to find him many times. He lost the collar and tab up a tree a while ago, it is not retrievable but I know which tree it's in 😆

The problem with Tabcat is cost. Your get two tracking tabs in the original box, but if you then want to buy more it's £65 for two tabs. That might be cheaper than Tractive though?

It's available on Amazon if you want to have a look.

I have yet to find a tracker I am impressed with. I have Tabcat but I am not impressed with the range. You have to be almost near enough to see the cat before any of the buttons on the tracker light up!
I looked into other trackers including Tractive. A lot only use 2G or 3G which are being discontinued in many areas ( including ours)
There is a Tractive 4 G tracker but the subscription is quite pricey.
Airtags/ Tiles are quite bulky and need the cat to be near a relevant mobile signal to be effective
Not good in a rural area.
Open to ideas for a cheap tracker that will work over a reasonable range in a rural area

musicalfrog · 25/08/2025 16:00

With respect... how couldn't you find the lost trackers? Did they run out of battery? In which case you just need to recharge them more often.

Kittybelle123 · 25/08/2025 16:06

If I were an inventor I would be inventing a pet tracker that did not rely on a collar. I don’t like to think how much we have invested on tracking collars just for the little Houdini to get out of them. Alas…. I can but dream. For now I just have to rely on me roaming, shouting like a fish wife and shaking a packet of his favourite treats in the hope that he will appear.

Will watch this thread in the hope that someone has an answer!

Marinel · 25/08/2025 16:27

@musicalfrog

The problem with some of the trackers like Tractive is they need recharging every couple of days, so of course once they are lost the battery goes dead.

The Tabcat doesn't use rechargeables so that doesn't happen. I find I need to change the battery about every six months.

@CurlyKoalie It depends on the line of the sight as to how effective the Tabcat is. I once located my cat across the other side of a large field because there was nothing 'in the way' of the signal. It is also very useful when a cat is trapped in a shed or garage, you can't see the animal but the tracker knows they're there.

chunkybear · 25/08/2025 16:32

We use Tractive and just bought a second after the first came off - will check them out though as we’d not be without now as my dog can be a bit Wiley if she thinks DH has gone out without her … she’s taken herself out through windows and over 6 foot fences to find him 😵‍💫

They are all in people’s gardens who very patiently let me look in them,!but couldn’t find them anywhere, even with the lights and sound. I suspect two are in a very dense hedge between two properties, but the accuracy is just not there.

Some good suggestions here, thanks to people who have posted so far, will have a look into them.

musicalfrog · 26/08/2025 08:14

That's a shame @Feenie

I have taken a child with me to search in the past as they can hear the sounds better than I can (since I am now an old fart 😂)

Hope you find a decent solution.

iloveeverykindofcat · 26/08/2025 15:43

Apologies if I'm missing the obvious, but couldn't you just attach the Tractive to whatever collar you want to try on him? I've used them on a few trying to get something that my allergic girl wouldn't react to. She can also remove the Rogz collars.

Feenie · 26/08/2025 18:20

Any collar needs to be quick release - it’s the heavy feel of the Tractive device that he suddenly decided to take exception to. He’s not bothered about the AirTag, but the accuracy is not great for that either 🤷‍♀️

the pawfit one does a tracker that's extra light and you see on the app where the cat is

CurlewKate · 26/08/2025 18:44

I would love to track my wanderer, but I do worry about her wearing a collar and getting trapped by it…

Will have a look, thanks - Tractive does that on the app and it’s light, but bulky.

They are all quick release, @CurlewKate, but that’s part of the problem. I don’t mind losing them if I can find them (and the cat, if they are with it, obviously!)

We use Pawfit on our lab, highly recommend

it's fairly accurate I live on 30 acres so can see where they are. battery has to be charged more then the bigger one that's my only complaint. I have the bigger one on one of my dogs it last longer

Feenie · 29/08/2025 18:09

My neighbour has just found one of our Tractive collars, it was on her shed roof, so no wonder I couldn’t find it!

We use a combination of tabcat and tails and furs but I'd say it's no more effective than an air tag. Tabcat is ok but no way to tell if the battery is ok until it's flat!
The good thing about tails and furs is the beep is louder than tabcat. We trained our cats to come home for a treat when they hear the tabcat beep!
