Could our cat be on her way out?

Our 14 year old moggie has a non-specific liver problem (we didn’t bother with testing beyond bloods as the vet said it’s incurable regardless). The vet did say it might be a tumour.

When we were away for 2 weeks recently the cat sitter said she wasn’t eating much. She ate her normal amount once we were home. However yesterday I noticed that she’s not eating much again. DH said that during the day he picked her up from the basement and moved her to her food as she seemed to have forgotten to eat.

Normally she likes to sit close to us. She’s also very purry. Yesterday evening she didn’t want to be near us in the garden and barely purred when stroked. She’s not eaten much, if anything, overnight. She’s currently lying in the garden with her head stretched out (alive, I’ve seen her move).

This is it isn’t it?

Yes

just based on age alone

Give her the space she’s asking for

Dolphinosep0tatoes · 16/08/2025 06:55

It sounds like it might be, yes. I'm so sorry :(

MinnieMountain · 16/08/2025 06:56

Thought so. I’ve not had a cat live to this age before so I wasn’t sure what to look out for, but that makes sense.

I'm normally one for recognising when a cat is really at the end of its life, and while your cat may be in terminal decline from liver disease, she might just have an infection that is making her feel poorly. I'd check with your vet for a view (while avoiding a load of invasive tests) just in case antibiotics would perk her up.
14 is old for a cat, I've had several go at that age, but I've also had cats that have lasted a lot longer.
Best wishes - whatever you decide to do.

Sending you hugs. Run free Ivy 🌈

My girl had liver cancer and it did sound similar to Ivy. She passed at 14 too

RosesAndHellebores · 18/08/2025 21:07

RIP lovely girls and hugs to you @MinnieMountain. It's a wrench when they go.
