Cat still hiding under sofa

I moved house a week ago.

I kept him in one room for the first five days, then let him out to explore the rest of the bungalow. It’s not huge and he’s not going outside until it has cat proof fencing. .

I thought he was adjusting quite well, he was eating more, exploring and sitting on my lap in the evenings. He’s a roughly 9 year old Maine Coon rescue, who bonded with me really well.

Yesterday, I had three deliveries, inside the house (I put him in the bedroom) and now he’s just hiding under the sofa. He eats his food at night though. He just looks so sad.

Did I let him out too early?
Should I keep him in the bedroom until he’s more comfortable?
How long does he need to stay in one room?
Have I set him back by letting him explore too soon?
Oh, the cat mum guilt!

Without wishing to make you feel every more guilty, he's probably picking up on your anxiety over whether you are doing the right thing for him! 😂 If I were you I'd just leave him to explore, let him go where he wants to around the house, be with you if he wants to be or elsewhere if he prefers. Just act like everything is completely normal and he'll soon come round when he's sussed the place out. You could use a Feliway type plug in if you wanted. I don't particularly think they work very well, but I know some people swear by them. Can't harm to try!

You know if you post in the litter tray, you need to post the cat tax though... 😉
Hope puss settles soon and starts smiling again!

Thank you, you’re right I am probably making it worse. I’ll gladly take your advice.

What is the ‘cat tax’? I missed that bit. Happy to pay it.

Oh, the wee face....XXX

Purpleknickers · 13/08/2025 21:35

Take your lead from him. Let him explore freely and enjoy the snuggles.

I am pretty sure that he’s feeling much more relaxed now 😂
Thank you for your help x
