New house and cat fighting

Our rescue cat has all ways been notoriously docile. He was about 4 when we rescued him 4 years ago and I’m convinced he lived with a family before because not a single thing bothered him, including our 2 small children. The rescue centre even said they used him to check how the other cats were with other cats, as he was so chilled he wouldn’t be bothered.
we’ve recently moved house and he’s started scrapping :( he doesn’t really leave our garden and so a couple of the scraps have been either on the shed roof or in our garden, but tonight he’s been out of the garden and he’s come back covered in scratches :(
it seems to be the same cat who keeps coming to our garden and I’ve managed to shoo it away, but I can’t do that if he’s not at home. I know we could keep him in but that seems unfair after 8 years of being allowed out… any advice please?

Is the other cat neutered? You might need to seal off your garden to stop it getting in

I’m not sure, and I'm not sure how I’d get close enough to check. I don’t even know which house it lives at.
