Litter smells

Have a new addition to the family and the litter stinks the house out, even after 1 small pee.

Any recommendations? Years ago I used a Tesco own brand and it was the best.

I find World’s Best clumping cat litter quite easy to use. There is a lavender fragranced one if you fancy that, but I don’t think it smells remotely like lavender. We keep the litter tray in the bathroom which has a powerful extractor fan. Also easy to scoop and flush soiled litter. You do have to leave the bathroom door ajar when not in use though.

Done all of the above but the odour is so strong, almost like the litter is soaked right through and hasn't been changed for days. It's horrible.

It doesn't clump like it's supposed to either.

I use tescos own clumping litter from time to time but I prefer Biokitty unscented clumping litter.
It is more expensive initially but it last longer so works out cheaper.

Are you putting the litter in deep enough ? I put it about 4 - 5 inches deep.
I also have a hooded tray , if your not sure if your cat will use a hooded tray put a normal one in a snug fitting box and use paper / thin card to make a door.

One last thing , is your cats urine ok? A quick trip to the vets to get it tested for high protein/ sugar or other issues may help sort out if its a cat problem rather than a litter problem

Thanks for that. She'll be having her first vet visit soon so will mention to the vet if changing litter doesn't work.

You should not be flushing cat poo down the toilet. The wastewater treatment works can’t kill Toxoplasma Gondi and other germs/parasites.
Even if the litter says it’s flushable it can still expand and cause blockages in plumbing.

DeanStockwelll · 17/07/2025 13:56

@WildCherryBlossom if you are in the UK please do not flush cat litter , our sewage systems are not designed to cope with parasites and natural bacteria in cats ( and dogs ) and the litter ( clumping or non clumping) clog up the pipes .

oOiluvfriendsOo · 17/07/2025 14:15

I don't flush, even though I said I do all of the above to a pp, I use poop bags and dispose of that way.

Sanicat 7 day freshness, no pee smells and a really great litter! At under £3 a bag on Amazon it’s brilliant

waitingforthehallmarkedman · 17/07/2025 19:31

I use scoop planet. No smells and ultra clumping. One bag lasts ages. Also doesn't track like clay.

I second this. Scoop as needed and complete change every week (1 cat).

I used to use Tesco own brand but then they changed it and it's stinks almost straight away. I use Catsan now and I have the same problem.

I'm thinking it's the heat that affecting it at the moment as I scoop daily. Even a day after changing it it smelt.

My sister uses Amazon Super Clumping(in a grey bag) and it works for her cat, it just clumped into large blocks and smelt with mine.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 18/07/2025 07:10

We use Amazon own brand clumping litter (three cats) and it never smells.

Worriedmrs · 18/07/2025 07:20

You can try Felight cat litter freshener. Sprinkle a good amount before putting litter in the tray and then spray a little every day.

oOiluvfriendsOo · 18/07/2025 10:13

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.
Currently using Catsan and really need to change.
