Cat’s whiskers changing colour?

This is a total nothing-y question as I am in no way concerned re health, just curious. Our cat is two and has a VERY fine set of white whiskers. Except in the last week or so he has sprouted a single big black one. What’s going on? Surely he’s too young for the cat equivalent of peri-meno chin hairs?

Have your cats’ whiskers changed colour? Will they all turn black?

Our previous cat was a beautiful pure white girl, with white whiskers. We sadly lost her to cancer last year aged ten, and her whiskers never changed colour.

(The photo on the blanket was last night and the black whisker is one of his “antenna” ones above his eye. The selfie pic was a few weeks ago and no black whisker. The fence photo is just because he’s so handsome.)

My friends cat had black and white whiskers.
Ive never seen that before.
No idea if they were once all the same colour!

He's ginger. There'll be all sorts of colour genes going on in there. One of my tabbies has some black whiskers and some white, another of them has two-tone whiskers that are black near his face and white at the ends. Our ginger cat has... hang on, let me go and find him...

...he has mostly white whiskers apart from one black on the left and three on the right.

Please don’t tell me you are casting aspersions on my cat’s fine genetic lineage?

That's a fine set of eyebrows Louis has there! I remember him as a tiny little kitten, now he's all grown up and a magnificent gentleman 😻

Louie says thanks for all the love! Yesterday was his “half birthday” (a thing in this house because my real birthday is in the depths of February, which is truly the arsehole of the year) and he is now 30 months old. He celebrated by having cuddles in bed with me as I’m on holiday, enjoying the sunshine, then a lengthy game with a piece of tinfoil.

(The breakfast bun photo is from last week, but I think is evidence of his excellent cat-ness, and strong hunting instinct. The others are from yesterday.)
