Should I shave my kittens bum?

Shes 12 weeks old and long haired. She is good at grooming herself but keeps getting poop around the fur near her bottom.

Shes the first long haired cat we have had. She likes being brushed daily but would this be better for her hygeine?

My Siberian gets a sanitary trim at the groomer.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2025 14:40

Yes, used to do one of ours. Older now, no longer necessary.

TomatoSandwiches · 09/06/2025 14:42

Yes we do Mr Alpines pantaloons twice a year, it's better than the alternative.... a bath!

Favouritefruits · 09/06/2025 14:42

If you’re going to trim her when she’s older if get her used to it now! The younger the cat the more likely they’ll get used to it

I need to see pictures of both the OP’s kitty and Mr Alpines, please!

Aw, she's adorable!

Perhaps try scissors rather than shaving her? The noise of the shaver might scare her. You can get special pet scissors with blunt tips to avoid accidents.

When I have to trim WolfCat, I find it's easier when she's curled up on her side and somebody else is distracting her by tickling her under her chin.

Thanks, I used the clippers as I'd be scared with scissors and I figured if I get her used to it now it wont be an issue in the future. She was really brave!

I trim my cats' pantaloons with scissors and they get a hygiene trim at the groomer's.

IsThisLifeNow · 11/06/2025 17:06

Oh my word, she's beautiful!!

More longhaired cat photos please!

Yes I used to trim my longhaired cats bum fluff to stop this

morbidd · 11/06/2025 19:12

We get our long haired cat’s bum shaved by an animal groomer. Defo worth it for these accidents.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/06/2025 20:36

My long haired Persians always had a hygiene trim at the groomers. Be very careful with their diet. You do not want them to get diarrhoea! I speak from painful experience 🤣

I do my long haired cat with blunt scissors (very carefully!) She does a good job of grooming normally but gets so furry in colder months she needs a helping hand around the bottom area, lol. The things we do for our pets! Pic of the total diva, just because.

Well now this is a thread to gladden the heart after a shocking work day!

MonjeeTee · 11/06/2025 22:46

Another photo for cat tax purposes.

Much better now her area has been trimmed. Nothing is getting stuck and she is much less stinky.

Princess Nemmy Poof (pictured here with her smooth sister) had to submit to some bum barbering in her salad days. It's funny how they learn to somehow not get poo in their bumfluff as they get older, isn't it?

I must admit that I just used normal nail scissors, and managed not to jab her.

Use scissors and dont cut it too short, you dont need them to have a baldy bum to keep clean. I have a very fluffy bum cat who needs a trim from time to time.

(For anyone with a neutered male, be careful not to snip the fuzzy shrivelled up scrotum that on first appearances looks like a matt 😳, thankfully the cat took off like a bat out of hell before it was too late 😆✂️).

NotDarkGothicMama · 12/06/2025 07:19

Princess Poopypaws had a bum bath yesterday as she was particularly stinky. She's like a tweenager who isn't bothered about basic hygiene yet.

Oh they are so gorgeous. My last kitty died in 2006, loveliest cat we ever had a half Persian ginger white, unusual for a girl. Two border collies, but miss having a cat. We didn't have this problem with her,but we did with our last dog,a Phalene ,he was a character,my cat substitute a furry lap dog.
