My cat has been run over 😭

My beautiful ginger tom has been missing for 24 hours and very sadly this evening I have found his body. He’s lying in a small gap between my shed and my garden fence. He must have been badly injured after a collision with a car, and was trying to get home. I don’t know what to do. It’s a wide enough gap for a slim person to squeeze in & retrieve him but I can’t face doing this, particularly as I’ve got no idea how mangled he might be. I called a Pest Contol company who said they could ‘retrieve dead animals’ but they’ve told me they can only do rats, badgers etc, not cats 🤷. I’m a single mum with a daughter doing her GCsEs tomorrow so I can’t tell her what’s happening. I don’t know what to do! Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh this is heartbreaking. Any neighbours who would understand? Or can you take a slat of fence out and reach him from that side?

Gingercar · 05/06/2025 20:08

I’m so sorry. Could you throw a blanket over him and pull him out without seeing him? You could then wrap him in it. Huge hugs to you all.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 05/06/2025 20:09

Can you give us a rough area op maybe we can help?

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 05/06/2025 20:10

I'm so sorry this happened 😕 Have you a neighbour who could help, or could you put a spade or snow shovel into the gap and try to shuffle him onto it?

If you had a box ready, you could slip him into it without looking too closely, then you could bury him in it.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 05/06/2025 20:12

I am so sorry op. This is heartbreaking for you and your dd. Poor little love trying to get home. 💔 In my opinion it should be illegal to not stop when you hit a cat.

Palestar · 05/06/2025 20:17

How awful for you. If I was your neighbour, I'd completely understand and come round to help. I bet there's someone local who could manage it to make it easier for you, if not a friend who'd come a bit further. It's quite normal that it's very hard to make yourself handle your own pet in the circumstances, but it's not an inherently unreasonable ask of someone unconnected.

Griffyn · 05/06/2025 20:22

Oh I’m so sorry this has happened, you must be devastated. Is there anyone you can ask to help? I love cats but buried a neighbours cat when she was too upset to do it Sad I found it’s easier when it’s not your own.

beezlebubnicky · 05/06/2025 20:23

I'm so sorry 🫂 can someone help you, I think the blanket suggestion is a good one.

Kibble19 · 05/06/2025 20:24

So sorry, OP. What a terrible situation.

Most of the time, especially at night, you would have no idea if you clipped a cat. You have to accept that cats who roam outside could be Injured/killed by cars.

godiva1999 · 05/06/2025 20:36

Thank you so much for your kind words and helpful advice. I feel such a wuss. My son is home tomorrow, who’s made of quite steely stuff but I think even he might struggle as he adored that cat. My neighbours aren’t all that helpful unfortunately. Either elderly or renters I don’t know. Covering him with a blanket is a good idea. It’s such a tight spot, there’s no wiggle room. I need to move fast though.

Not really the point or necessary on this thread.

Gingercar · 05/06/2025 20:49

Could you ask on a local Facebook page. I’m sure someone would help you. I don’t want to freak you out, but you risk the chance of a fox or something trying to get at him if he’s left there.

ScottBakula · 05/06/2025 21:02

Oh I am so sorry @godiva1999 , that's horrible.

Like pp say is there a nighbour that could help or let us know roughly where you are and perhaps we can help.

Sending out a bat cat signal to @thecatneuterer can you help.

ScottBakula · 05/06/2025 21:03

Hmm that tag didn't seem to work

On bless him. I would call the vet in the morning (or their 24hr line) if a neighbour can’t help you, they will send someone out to get his body and take him to the surgery. Hopefully they can help arrange cremation if that’s what you would like.

vets usually offer collection services though I hate calling it that.
