Cat pooing only on kitchen floor- help!

My beautiful 17 year old tuxedo cat has started only pooing on the kitchen floor. He started getting anxious when we went away last summer and my mum was looking after him and that’s when he did it for the first time. Over the last year he does it if it’s raining or another cat is around or if it’s windy or cold or some other cat reason we don’t understand!

Until now both cats have always gone outside to do their business but we started putting a litter tray out for him (which he will only sometimes use). But his preferred poo place is right in front of the sink in our small kitchen so we can’t keep it there all the time.
We took him to the vets who couldn’t find any issues.

has anyone got any advice?

It’s probably just old age - they often forget things like where to go to the toilet, or struggle with pain which means they don’t like getting in and out of the litter tray, or going outside as they feel vulnerable.

I’m surprised the vet hasn’t considered dementia or arthritis in all honesty. Something like 80% of cats over the age of 8 have arthritic changes so a 17yo cat most certainly does.

I would go back and ask for a pain trial, increase the number of litter trays available and make sure they’re easy access and on ground level so he. An just walk in and out.

Thank you @faerietales for such a quick response. I’ve looked up cat dementia and he has quite a few signs. I will take him back to the vets and see what they say.
