Lump/wound on cat

I'll be taking him to the vet of course, but in the meantime I wondered what people here think this may be. Cat has a lump/swollen area under his fur low down on his back. Sensitive to the touch but when I did manage to get a look I can see there are 3 small puncture marks in the shape of a triangle. I can't think what could have caused this - any ideas?

Probably had a scrap and it's a bite, vet first thing tomorrow for antibiotics. Bathe with salt water in the mean time.

Does your cat go out? I have had multiple vet visits over the years because of cats having a spat with other cats and getting an infected bite/claw injury

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 13/03/2025 21:57

Definitely sounds like a bite, wash with warm saline if they'll let you and the vet as soon as you can. My male cat has had plenty and always recovers well in time

Iloveanicegarden · 13/03/2025 22:00

Bathe it with warm salt water frequently. It might discharge but you still need to go to the vet

Marinel · 13/03/2025 22:01

That sounds like an abscess from a cat bite. Get a vet appointment asap.

pinotnow · 13/03/2025 22:08

So do I need to stay off work do you think to get an earlier appointment than tomorrow evening? He has had stuff like this before but years ago and then always around his face - It's like some little sod jumped him as he was running away - more like his style nowadays!

Def sounds like an abscess from a bite - get they are very painful, I'd get him an earlier appointment.

Avatartar · 13/03/2025 22:11

My cat had loads of these over the years near her tail, vet said it was when she ran away from a fight and got grabbed and bitten by the other cat as she retreated. There’s a big bully cat beating yours up

CatsWhiskerz · 13/03/2025 22:13

My cat gets these, an abscess after cat bite, vets drain then and give antibiotics and pain meds. She told me it's common, usually on face if fighting or bum is they've turned around to get away - my little kitty has had both ends a few times 🥺

littlbrowndog · 13/03/2025 22:23

Yeah usually bum or face. The vet will give antibiotics jab

mine got a bite of a rat on his chest. 2 clear teeth marks. Vet said the rat turns rounds and bites them. But she said when cats are having a fight it’s either face or bums when they run away

littlbrowndog · 13/03/2025 22:24

I think tomorrow evening will be fine

Marinel · 13/03/2025 22:48

Tomorrow eve is probably okay. See how he is in the morning, if you’re worried at that point try to get an earlier appointment.

TeaRoseTallulah · 15/03/2025 17:41

How is he OP?

pinotnow · 15/03/2025 18:57

Thanks for asking @TeaRoseTallulah - I took him to the vet and he had already burst the abscess himself. She cleaned it up - no antibiotics as he didn't have a temperature so he just has the collar of doom and some anti-inflammatory medicine. He's feeling very sorry for himself because of the collar and not going out but otherwise fine!
