Taking on three rescue cats!

Other than being around friends and family's cats, we've never actually owned our own and are taking on three rescues, are we mad?

We were originally looking for a pair but wanted older than kittens and cats that are ok with kids/like affection and cuddles which can be tricky with rescues. Anyway we spotted some that sounded perfect in every way but are a trio! There was suggestion on the website they could possibly be split into a pair and a single if they struggled to re-home them but there was no way we were going to do that to them, so here we are!

All advice gratefully received 😄😺😺😺

My biggest piece of advice would be - get cardboard boxes for them. Cheapest cat toy ever. And make holes in them for them to smack attack each other through. They love it.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 21/02/2025 21:07

Oh my word, that would be my dream😻 Cats are amazing pets and the more the merrier IMO.

Dcat unfortunately does not agree with my philosophy and insists on being an only cat! She is a rescue and she is the boss obviously so an only cat she is🙄🤣

Enjoy your beautiful cats, I hope they settle really well. They are so lucky, separating them would have been awful.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/02/2025 22:05

They're going to be trouble 🤣.
Good call taking all three - but not sure if three are really enough...

They are gorgeous! And bonded cats are the best thing ever. Mine keep each other entertained, active, and happy, and they are never far apart. And it is the cutest thing when they groom and cuddle each other.

They are gorgeous aren't they 😍 I honestly don't understand why black and black and white are the most overlooked

Sadly, it appears that black cats "don't photo well to post on Instagram", and black and white are "common" and "boring". Brighter colours like tabby (esp tabby & white), ginger and for the girls tortie (not dark of course, and pref with white as well) look particularly good on social media. 😡

I should point out here that I have a black girl, didn't care either way when after losing her brother the best companion for her from the rescue turned out to be a tabby, and a DSis with 2 black & white after her previous pair of black & white. Plus I don't really use social media as such. Unless you count here - and this site is not in any way discriminatory about cats!

Agree 100% with everything you've said here @Allergictoironing.

I'd also add that anyone who says black cats aren't photogenic is just a crap photographer 🤣.

Wow how wonderful having a readymade family of 3 cats!

Flyingflamingoes · 22/02/2025 08:22

Congratulations on your new cat overlords 😊
We went from a cat free hiatus of 10+ years to adopting 3 rescues- mum and her 2 babies.
Best decision ever but so much more hair in the air!
Heartily agree with the recommendations for cardboard boxes and also a screwed up envelope- hours of fun.

Dolambslikemintsauce · 22/02/2025 09:05

Oo they are beauties op!!

ScottBakula · 22/02/2025 09:39

Aww they are lovely!
I only have one grumpy overlord but if he was more social I'd have lots more.

On a practical basis;
Ask the rescue centre what food and litter brands they are currently on and stick with using them for at least a few weeks.
If you want to change it do so very gradually over a week or two and don't change the food brand and the litter brand at the same time.
Change one give them a while to get use to the new brand then change the other.
Also ask the rescue for a small amount of used litter so you can put it in their trays so they know where to go.
As pp said , ideally 1 tray per cat + one spare but I realise 4 litter trays is going to take up a lot of space !
Ask the rescue if they know if the cats normally share trays.

I have found shop bought scratching posts are useless and ignored. Make your own by stapling/ nailing a piece of old carpet ( ask a carpet shop for a off cut ) to a piece of 2 x 2 wood that's taller than your cats can reach ( my cats is 2.5 ish ft tall ) fasten that to a large platform of carpet coverd wood . Than needs to be wide enough for your cats back paws to be on it while his front paws are scratching to stop it falling over.

Boxes ,allll the boxes !

ime cats * *dont really like cat beds they would much rather sleep on your clean washing , pillow , your spot on the sofa, on the stairs, in the door way or as @AlisonDonut said on a bed of carrots.

Thank you for the prompt payment of cat tax 😺

Toddlerteaplease · 22/02/2025 10:02

A bonded trio sound fabulous! If you are having two, one more will make little difference.

FoxBaseBeta · 22/02/2025 10:13

Thank you for all the gorgeous cat photos and great advice!

I'd always assumed black cats would be the most popular, until I heard about the whole SM thing. I think they're beautiful!

I had identical black cats. It was great fun!

stormsandsunshine · 22/02/2025 12:31

I think some people also still have superstitions about black cats, sadly (though I was always brought up to believe they were lucky!)

tillytoodles1 · 22/02/2025 16:39

My adopted cat is black.

Zinner · 22/02/2025 16:51

Oh I think I’ve seen your adoptees! I’m pretty sure they are from an rspca local to me and I kept having a look at the website as I clearly got a bit invested in them getting a home together. So pleased they’ve got a brilliant new home with a Litter Tray poster!
We’ve already got a rspca tuxedo boy who is very much happiest as a lone cat otherwise I’d definitely have three.
Good luck and send us an update when they are home!

Oh haha yep they're from RSPCA 😀

Have you seen the little girl cat called Dusty? She is the sweetest little thing and I'm now invested in hoping she gets adopted soon!

OP posts:
Zinner · 22/02/2025 18:09

Yes I’ve seen Dusty online, she does look a sweetie, fingers crossed she gets snapped up. I’m also invested in Chunk - we went to their Christmas fair early December - they were doing tours of the cattery. Chunk was there then, so isn’t finding his new home very quickly ☹️ he seemed very chill but not massively friendly apparently.
You are doing a lovely thing adopting three together!

Milliemoo1908 · 22/02/2025 19:01

I rescued two sisters and loved it so much i rescued one more, it was was quite awful for a few weeks as the older two weren’t very accepting towards her but quickly adjusted . Fast forward 12 months and we are all good and the only thing I would have done differently is rescue three at tne same time! If I had the room I would have more 😁 go for it xx

Randomusername37258 · 22/02/2025 20:23

It's like chicken maths, you go in for 1 chicken and you come out with 5 then a week later you're building a pen for your new ostrich because you need company for the ducks.

All of which is to say 3 sounds much better than 1.

FoxBaseBeta · 22/02/2025 20:52

@Milliemoo1908 oh my they are gorgeous!

Well we've had them a week and they officially own the place 😻😻😻
It already feels like they've been part of the family forever! They all snuggled on me and DH for a nap earlier, which was the sweetest thing ever ☺️
