Liver disease

I appreciate this is vague, but I’m trying to get a rough idea of what to expect.

My 14yo cat was diagnosed with a liver problem in December through blood tests. We decided not to put her through further tests as the vet said it’s terminal regardless.

Can anyone who’s cat has died from liver problems give me an idea of what to expect please?

So far she has lost weight and in the last month she has started vomiting her food up every few days. I’ve also noticed when she lies on me that her breathing is a bit laboured.

I don't have specific experience of liver disease in cats, but several of my cats have died from kidney disease with similar end of life symptoms.
I think I would be guided by your vet - but I'm afraid that given the symptoms I suspect you will need to consider pts sooner rather than later.
Sorry you are going through this 💐.

I thought as much @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats .

DH has asked me to not tell him if she needs to be PTS whilst he and DS are away in April. Sadly, I doubt she’ll last that long.

Bumping in case anyone else has experience.

Not a cat so possibly useless, but our family dog had liver disease. The vet said they tend not to display symptoms until it’s pretty advanced (our very greedy cocker got very fussy about food and was sick quite often) and that there wasn’t really much to do at that point.

He slowed down, got even fussier about eating, and towards the end his tummy got swollen (and upset toilet-wise) which was when my mum made his last appointment. He was still happily going for short (slow) walks until then, waggy tailed and happy to see visitors.

It was a short time between diagnosis and saying goodbye. Weeks rather than months. I still miss that good boy. So sorry you are going through this 🤍

I lost my cat to liver disease in 2023 aged 15 plus , he lost weight ( was never that big ) and his fur lost condition , the vet tried rehydration but he was getting slimmer and losing his appetite, we knew he was dying but wanted him to have a bit more time but in the end he was in the garden and was just wondering around aimlessly ? Standing in the water on the table where he used to drink from , I decided to call it a day before he suffered too much , it was hard as we lost his brother the heat before and we had them both from about 6 weeks .
Loved him so much , RIP Gilbert xx

Oops , lost his brother the year before ! And with Gilbert it was less than 3 weeks from diagnosis but I think we knew something was amiss but were blaming his age for a week or so

I'm sorry to hear this op our darling boy was pts this afternoon he had liver failure which was only picked up before Christmas. He lost so much weight in that short space of time and his fur had become so dull I knew it probably wouldn't be too long, he really only stopped eating and drinking at the weekend and his mobility became less and less this week I knew by yesterday evening it was time to let him go peacefully before it became too much for him. We are devastated 💔 he was just the best boy but he wasn't himself this last few weeks and it wasn't fair on him. It's a hard time OP I wish you and your lovely cat all the best

Thank you for sharing everyone.

He’s beautiful @3kidsaremorethanenough 💐

It sounds like not eating is the thing to look out for.

I’ve recently started working from home and Ivy likes to keep me company in my office, so I’ll treasure that extra time.

Aw two beautiful looking cats 😍I think you do right minniemountain spend as much time now as you can with her, I feel like even though we knew this was going to happen it all happened very quickly today but then it was always going to be too quick 😪

MinnieMountain · 20/02/2025 20:25

Ivy’s eating has really reduced in the last 24 hours. DH and DS are away together at the moment, so I can’t talk to DH. It’s going to be early next week I think. My poor girl.

Poor Ivy and poor you Minnie 😢 it's so hard to watch them decline, lots of cuddles and head rubs she's so lucky to have you taking care of her. Thinking on you both ❤️
