At the end of my tether with this fucking cat

I love her really but bloody hell

She has a litter tray - regularly cleaned but never used ( she used to)
I'm spending so much money on plug in pheromones
No other animals in the house, not seemingly stressed

She also only does her poos next to the front door and does wees all over the place...

I really don't know what to do with her

She gets lots of cuddles and attention I don't think she has a UTI - but can a vet help?

Firstly take her to the vet to be checked out to rule out any underlying health condition.

What do you clean the areas with? If they aren't cleaned properly with a cleaner which breaks down the enzymes then the smell will be attracting her back to the area.

How many liter trays do you have? Some cats like different trays to poo and wee in.

One of my cats is very highly strung and has had similar issues at times with both poo and wee so I sympathise as it's exhausting.

It's definitely a vet job, cats are clean they only use other areas when there is an issue or if the area they previously used when there was an issue still smells of them.

I'd explore different litters too my are very finicky, they like the odour control clumping one from Morrisons it's fine like sand opposed to Catsan which is chunkier.

I'm cleaning with dettol lavender and lemon. Occupationally citradora spray but I can't stand the smell myself!

Do you have any recommendations for enzyme spray @Logoplanter.

Will also try different litter, but annoyingly I brought an absolutely massive bag of biodegradable wood pellets 😔

Is she indoor only?

angel1977 · 06/01/2025 20:33

Definately try small bags of different litters. Mine hates wood based ones and will only use fine sand type texture or normal soil from outside.

AnnaMagnani · 06/01/2025 20:38

She needs the vet - it probably isn't a UTI but FLUTD. She may need a special diet and/or pain relief.

You need to clean up everywhere with pet urine cleaner, not Dettol - bleach can actually encourage them to wee in those places again.

If she used to use the litter, why doesn't she now? You need to think like a cat - does she not like the place it's in, not like the litter, get frightened once when she was on it...

Is her brain occupied and does she have cat things to do? Places to sit up high, food dispenser toys, playing with her and so on. If you need tips have a look at Jackson Galaxy on youtube on how to play with your cat.

Try Worlds Best Litter rather than wood pellets.

And get her seen by her vet. It is highly unusual for a cat to suddenly start urinating outside the litter box. You want to be sure there is no underlying issues.

beccahamlet · 06/01/2025 20:41

When this happened with my cat, it turned out she was diabetic......

Logoplanter · 06/01/2025 21:19

I use Simple Solution Extreme Cat Stain and Odour Remover, Enzymatic Cleaner (sorry I can't do links but you can buy it from Amazon). The smell gets up my nose but I do think it works. I suspect the Dettol will be attracting your cat to the areas and she may be trying to cover up the smell of the Dettol with her own scent.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/01/2025 21:23

Absolutely no expert - but I have been cat sitting for my neighbour’s cats and one was repeatedly pooing outside the tray. He had wood pellet litter. In desperation I took through a spare litter tray from here with our litter (Catsan) and bingo, no more accidents. I immediately hit pay on Amazon Prime for more!

The cats usually go out but were indoors when neighbour was away, and clearly did not like his litter choice. I’d definitely try a different litter.

PronounsBaby · 06/01/2025 22:48

She does have access and go outside.

I've ordered some spray and will get some new litter, laser pen (which I have been meaning to replace for ages) and call the vet tomorrow.

Thanks all, top notch advice as always! 😻
