Maine coon cross cats

I’m considering getting a kitten which is Maine coon with domestic short hair. I was just wondering if anyone had this mix and how big their cat got and which traits came through strongest from the parents.

I hope you aren't paying a fortune for what is essentially a moggy!

RandomMess · 05/01/2025 11:48

It's a complete gamble.

I have a Devon boy who is tiny compared to his Dad meanwhile his litter brother is HUGE and larger than Dad 🤷🏽‍♀️

Julen7 · 05/01/2025 11:55

I have a Maine Coon rag doll cross, now 4 years old and huge (has to be said also quite feisty, not the calm disposition associated with a Maine Coon at all)

RandomMess · 05/01/2025 12:00

Do not be conned into paying lots of money, check the genetic testing of the MC is clear of issues too.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/01/2025 12:43

I have one - she is big for a BSH and small for a MC, lol. Very, very hairy though so looks bigger. Very people orientated and friendly. Also very lazy.

Moier · 05/01/2025 12:57

My Cat is half Maine coon.. didn't realise when l got him as a kitten.. but he grew huge pretty quick and had all the traits.. furry ears.. big long bushy tail he wraps around himself.. when he went to be castrated it was confirmed by the vet.. along side my daughters cats who are same black and white and older he's huge at 18 months old and weighs a ton.

Twice the food and cat litter costs if they end up big!

fivebyfivebuffy · 05/01/2025 13:22

The vet thinks mine has some MC in but not sure how much
He's about 7kg so eats more, I use an under bed storage tray as a litter tray
Very friendly, cuddly and would rather be with me than exploring outside
He has little ear tufts! He's tall height wise and long

Ginger moggies tend to have the same sweet personalities. And you can’t go wrong with a gorgeous black mog.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/01/2025 14:25

@fivebyfivebuffy I would like to see 7kg of shady and 2.5kg of Penelope next to each other!

That would be hilarious Grin

Honestly, if you're looking online it's likely to be a moggy that's a bit fluffy. Don't be fooled by this.

It's a cliché because it's true, you can never be sure of a cat's temperament, if even if purebred.

My two are diametrically opposed personality wise!

My 'sweet' ginger moggy has just ran C shaped at me and sunk his teeth into my leg when I gave him into trouble for trying to climb into the recycling bin. He's a menace 😂

OP, my mum's cat was a MC cross. He was a beautiful long haired tabby and was just slightly smaller than a full MC. He was 18lbs and I could touch the tip of his tail without bending down. His tail was sooo long and floofy. He was the sweetest boy and so affectionate.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/01/2025 14:56

@No33 I agree. I suspect most of the kittens advertised as Persian crosses are just fluffy normal cats.

caringcarer · 05/01/2025 15:11

My half Maine Coone boy is huge, very fluffy long hair, enormous bushy tail and very affectionate. I paid £50 for him as a 9 week old kitten and he was quite big then. I did wonder if only 9 weeks but breeder said he was and 6 in the litter. Some litter mates were big like him and 3 smaller and shorter hair like the Mum. Male cats are usually bigger than female cats.

I think people often forget that DLH cats existed long before Maine Coons were around, and some of those DLHs can be quite big.
I'd ask why any so called 'breeder' produces Maine Coon crosses anyway. As Toddler said upthread a Maine Coon cross is a moggy.

I really hope the cat world manages to avoid the excesses of the dog world and the various Shitpoo combinations available from puppy farms - though I did see the term Perdoll recently which made me want to bang my head against a brick wall.

Exhibit A. NOT a Maine Coon.
(despite what cat scanner says)

What a beautiful cat!!

DecafDodger · 05/01/2025 15:35

Mine is, he's about 7 kilos so bigger than average housecat, but not a Maine Coon size. He's very friendly, hangs out with various neighbours, always there to greet the postman and anybody else who passes the house.

they do say ginger cats are like red head people can be quite feisty my dad had a ginger and all the dogs in his neighbourhood were frightened of the cat! the neighbour used to check if the cat was out before she let the dog out.
we inherited mil cat when she passed Minky is now 23 years old n might be a moggy but is gorgeous noisy eats like a horse gets through a box of felix sachets in less than 3 days and is still full of life

An acquaintance has a Maine Coon Ragdoll cross. He’s huge, fluffy - and frankly pretty vicious.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/01/2025 23:34

@DecafDodger he is gorgeous!

DecafDodger · 07/01/2025 09:51

I have also informed my 2 dogs that they will now be called shitpoos :D

Heronatemygoldfish · 07/01/2025 09:57

@DecafDodger aww he looks like my full MC (who is also 7kg so not large for the breed)

HereBeFuckery · 20/01/2025 06:13

This is our rescue who is apparently MC in part, says the vet. He eats a lot, sleeps a lot and loves a cuddle. He's a babe.

You don’t necessarily get long hair, our female has the double coat but both coats the same length, her fur does feel extremely dense and silky though. She is not noticeably different than our moggies, although will hunt like a demon if allowed to do so.
We have a full bred MC, quite a small one for the breed, who is incredibly people orientated and wants to spend all his time with us. If this is what you want, I would splash out on full MC cats.
