White cats yay or nay?

After initially enquiring about two darker cats who have now gone, I have been offered two completely white cats by the same breeder - something I had never considered. They are beautiful.

The cats were first to he reserved by another family but they didn't go ahead.

My main concerns are that's they'd be an easy target for foxes and also that they may be deaf. Seller says she thinks their hearing is ok but cats can also sense vibrations. I think white cats hearing can deteriorate over time too.

They are beautiful though and I'm very very tempted. We live on a quietish road wirh speed bumps but also near a rat-run so there are some dangerous drivers around here. Most cats are fine and none of my neighbours cats have ever been run over but I'd be worried if they can't hear.

What colour are their eyes? Deafness is more common in blue-eyed white cats. It should be possible to tell if they can hear at the moment or not by seeing if they react to sudden noise. If they are deaf, or lost their hearing, would keeping them indoors (with a catio perhaps) be an option?

rosydreams · 29/12/2024 13:39

white cats are prone to skin cancer its recommended to keep them indoor cats as well as the risk of deafness

DoComeToMeKitty · 29/12/2024 13:47

One had blue eyes but these have no changed I think. The other has two different coloured eyes.

My white cat used to sleep in the coal skuttle ...

custardpyjamas · 29/12/2024 13:51

We had a lovely white cat, we always had a cat flap so she could go in and out when she liked, she was a real hunter too despite being visible from miles away, lived a happy, healthy life to 20 years old.

My white cat would always manage to find nice black clothes to sleep on and cover them with white fur!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 29/12/2024 13:53

My white cat is an indoor cat, all white with blue eyes, no hearing issues, she's 19. She's very sweet and very daft. You do need to be careful about skin cancer if they go out

AlisonDonut · 29/12/2024 13:54

My white cat is the bees knees. Here he is staring at the fire.

I was told white cats were likely to be deaf but he can hear a packet of treats being opened from the top of the garden.

My sister used to have a white cat - she christened him 'Dusty' - he lived up to his name 😁.
White cat with blue eyes are most likely to be deaf. I believe odd eyed white cats may be deaf on the blue eyed side only.

custardpyjamas · 29/12/2024 13:59

Cats and foxes usually come to an arrangement to leave each other alone, never had a problem with any of our cats including the white one. We had foxes living under the summerhouse one year but no cat drama!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/12/2024 14:17

We had to say goodbye to our beautiful white girl earlier this year, but she was the absolute best cat. She could hear a packet being opened from three gardens away, and was the smartest, sweetest, funniest girl. We had a battle to put sunscreen on her ears in the summer, but until she developed intestinal lymphoma this year at 10 she was a healthy and happy cat who we miss very much. 🤍

I used to have very handsome white Persian cat. He was a lovely chap who lived to be12.

I had a beautiful white cat, no deafness but yes, I had to put suncream on her ears which she didn't appreciate because she was an adventurous cat and loved being outside. I actually felt less anxious about her being white (and therefore noticeable) as it made seeing her from a distance much easier and I knew she was there to call her in for the night. I now have a pure black cat and she doesn't go outside, very sweet also but I'd be more anxious if I lost her on a dark night as she's so hard to see! My white cat was always easy to see.

Aahhh, I was also coming in the day about the white gene in cats is linked to deafness, not always but it's a higher incidence. It is necessarily both ears so just see how they react if it's something you want to avoid.
If you've do have them, be careful with their environment as they won't hear cars 🥺 so possibly indoor cats with a catio ?

Nannyfannybanny · 29/12/2024 14:55

I'm so jealous! As a child my late parents had a white cat, green eyes not deaf, I adored him only child,he was deliberately poisoned apparently they didn't tell me at the time. They found an identical one. I wanted a white, cat protection league never had them. Do you remember Arthur in the KitKat adverts, I had a silver tabby who helped himself to food from the tin.

We have a little ginger boy now and I am glad he has a white bib and socks to see him in the garden on dark nights! I used to shout our girl and she would be a white streak running to the door.

We had a stunning what cat. His foster carers thought he was deaf, but then realised he just didn't listen. We used to put sunscreen on his ears. But apart from that nothing special. He was wonderful.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/12/2024 16:14

He used to spend a lot of time sitting under cars.....

MauveVelcro · 29/12/2024 16:18

We had a beautiful fully white cat, no issues with deafness. We called her Ebony which was always commented on. And our fully black cat was Ivory 😂

Itiswhysofew · 29/12/2024 17:04

My little white cat.

My niece took this photo. She looks really old in it. She's 12. I found her in the road when she was 4 weeks old. No problem with her hearing. She's very timid, so spends her life indoors. If I didn't have 2 other cats that she doesn't mix with, that use the garden, I'd take her outside supervised.

She loves the sun and heat, and fortunately, I've got a very sunny room with a balcony that she can go into. I have to put sun cream on her very pink ears though.

Beware, lots of white fur everywhereGrin

Aah that's awful about the poisoning 🥺 some people are just horrible
I remember Arthur cat 🥰 - and our black cat also helps himself to pouches from the box, chews the and stands on them to push the meat out 🤣 ... and we call him the daft one lol 😝

Scutterbug · 29/12/2024 17:08

We had a gorgeous white cat, he lived to 22. Called Montague nn Monty.

What did white cats in the wild use to do? Sure you can’t choose to keep a cat indoors just based on its fur colour?
