The cats going to cause a divorce

A few months ago I gave my husband an ultimatum, he either sorts his cat out or I’m leaving. His cat was peeing all over the house, all over our things, just a nightmare. He’s changed her food to senior food and this seems to have done the trick however now it’s litter tray smells like nothing I’ve ever smelt before. It is absolutely filling the house with the smell and I can’t cope with it. I refuse to refuse to touch the tray, something he was aware I wouldn’t be doing before we moved in together. But the smell is so bad I’m honestly considering cancelling hosting Christmas this year because I’m so embarrassed our house smells like cat shit. What do we do? Just keep trying different foods? Honestly feel like it’s going to end our marriage at this rate.

I make him do it everyday. But if I left him to it he wouldn’t.

How often is the litter being changed? You should have atleast 2 trays for one cat, a cat won't use a dirty tray, so it's not clean it will do it's business elsewhere.

We have 1 now, we did have 2 but for some reason she would t use that one she would just pee in front of it

The cat needs a trip to the vet, surely? Smelly urine/peeing round the house would indicate kidney issues and needs investigating.

She’s been prescribed these urinary tract capsules that go in her food. Nothing else wrong with her.

Does the tray have a filter and a door that sits properly closed? I ordered a new one and I've returned it as the door just kind of hangs around so it is open. The one we had orginially seems to almost seal when shut so I've ordered a new one of those.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 21/12/2024 20:36

if a cat shits in a tray and it isn't scooped out, they will probably not use it again to do a wee, hence why it may be peeing elsewhere? You should have another tray if there isn't someone in the house who can scoop the poo straight away.

If he's already doing this then I'd suggest a trip to the vet, it could be something medical.

It's a shame that you won't tend to the cat.

MaMoosie · 21/12/2024 20:38

It’s a closed tray. I even bought special littler tray reed infusers that sit on top to try and filter the smell. It never used to smell this bad until we switched the food but I’m worried changing the food again will lead to urinating all over the house again.

I had a cat with ibs.

If he ate the wrong sort of food he would stink the house out.

Vet saw him many many times, nothing wrong with him,

Change food

Warringstars · 21/12/2024 20:40

can’t help with the main point but seriously if your house smells like catshit then yes you should absolutely cancel hosting Xmas dinner, that’s not going to be pleasant for anyone surely

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 21/12/2024 20:41

The food isn't Meowing Heads by chance, is it? That stuff stinks both before and after it's been through a cat.

MaMoosie · 21/12/2024 20:42

Its whiskers senior. We’ve bought the Sainsbury’s own senior as she was on that before but the younger cat version but I think husband wants to use all the whiskers first so the smell continues. I’m so miserable. Also have horrendous D&V atm so the smell is making puke.

We use Lily's Kitchen senior cat food and it's not too bad.

FofB · 21/12/2024 20:49

We had an elderly cat. I bought several 'hug rugs' which are washable. I put them in the areas he liked and washed them on a weekly basis. It helped with the smell.

Gettingbysomehow · 21/12/2024 21:01

My old cat did all this. I loved her so I just lived with it and bought a good aquavac. I didn't have anyone round to the house during this time because the smell was awful.
I'd never give her supermarket cat food though a sachet of that would cause the apocalypse. She had very good quality gastric cat food and lily's kitchen or organic food.

Have you tried taking the top off the litter tray? Maybe the cat doesn't like the enclosed space. Also might not like the type of cat litter.

As pp said you need to change and clean the litter regularly, and remove anything in the litter very frequently.

Theunamedcat · 21/12/2024 21:34

Whiskers is quite high in suger low in actual meat it really stinks when one of my cats eats it the other two not so much we changed foods because ye gods the STENCH it wasn't runny or anything but it stank like it should have I kept checking to see if he was ill he wasn't it was the food

Try classic cat

Potentialmadcatlady · 21/12/2024 21:37

What cat litter do you use? Because that makes a big difference. I use worlds best for picky cats in top loader trays with the litter deep. No smell unless they don’t cover their poo. I scoop twice a day

biscuitsandbooks · 21/12/2024 21:42

Whiskas is a really poor quality food - I would look to switch her onto something with a higher meat content and fewer fillers.

StarDolphins · 21/12/2024 21:50

Just clean the shit out of the tray frequently. Get a feliway if she’s stressed but she’s obviously old so a bit of patience, adaption & understanding is all that’s needed. Feeling like this is a reasonably new marriage!

She’s not that old, same age as my cat, 7. And no, not a new marriage.

You need one of these.
Best thing l bought for my cat.

How PeeWee works
When the cat pees in the litter box, 90% of the urine drains through the sieve in the top tray into the bottom tray and the remaining 10% is absorbed by the pellets in the top tray.

These then decompose into sawdust and also fall into the bottom tray when the cat starts digging.

No more urine smells
The pellets in the top tray stay clean and dry: there's no need to replace them, just top them up and remove the poop using the scoop provided. That makes PeeWee so extremely economical to use.

Just empty the sawdust from the bottom tray every few days and the PeeWee litter box will smell of freshly sawn wood again: incredible but true!

The cats going to cause a divorce
HardenYourHeart · 21/12/2024 22:08

I have two PeeWee litter boxes, but I am no longer using the sieve or the pellets.. I have the top off of mine and I use a wood based clumping litter. Cat's Best. Works well, but I scoop every morning and clean once a week.
