Vet and prescription

Wondering if this is normal practice.

I needed a prescription from vet to buy medication online for my chonk.
They are insisting that they don't give out prescriptions, they send them electronically to the online vet.

Fine, excepts they taken two weeks to do it.

It would have been so much easier for me to upload it.

Is this normal practice?

Starting to think they're just making it as awkward as possible because I'm not buying direct from them

No it’s not normal. I used to get mine in a day or so.

It's amazing how long "online" takes to do I'm waiting 5/7 working days for some photos to be sent via email it would be quicker (triple the price though) to send them as prints through the post 🙄

I'm furious!! It's only for flea treatment.

I've asked them twice for a paper prescription and they flat out refuse, saying it's not our policy.

I can't see a way round it really, apart from changing vets or having an all out row with them

Really don't want to do that as they're local.

No, it's not normal - I get a paper prescription same day if needed.

It's a minimum 1 week turnaround for a written prescription with my vet. It used to be 2 weeks as standard. It's still paper, but I can see it moving to electronic like with most NHS GP's for human meds.

They are probably quite vulnerable to fraud if people dishonestly send the same script to multiple pharmacies and it doesn't get checked.

I recently had to wait 3 weeks for my dog's anxiety prescription, which was also infuriating. Luckily I got it processed by the pharmacy in time.

Another problem is that I really need to see the prescription as they've been wrong 3 times in a row for our flea meds.

Not normal with my old vets (although who knows with the new ones). Old vets were a same day turnaround for paper scripts.

That's shockingly poor - I can turn up and ask for my cats' repeat prescription and it's in my hand 5 minutes later!

It is becoming more recommended by our authorities (I’m a vet) to send prescriptions directly to retailers as there has been a lot of online fraud involving them. And although 2 weeks is a little time flea treatment is not urgent. We have had a huge raft of new medicine regulations this year to get our heads round. We have a standard 48 hours for prescription collection (not written) at the surgery and often increases this time of year due to the demand pre Christmas. It is very unusual for a practice to supply immediately as @biscuitsandbooks has, as each one is authorised by a vet and double checked on dispensing which all takes time.

Our vet has to know who you are buying from but is quite prompt in doing the prescription

@Secretvet the more I read on here about how poor other practises, the more grateful I am for ours! They're much cheaper than most too.

What online fraud can there be with a vet prescription?

I suppose using the same prescription several times on different websites?

Our vets give a paper prescription but it then has to be posted to the provider as it says original must be seen, its an absolute pain. They said the reason they do this is to combat fraud, it may be that your vet has the same reason as they explained to us people would try and use their prescription in multiple places and it caused all kinds of issues.

Its unfortunately usually bought on by people taking advantage of the system.

I would perhaps point out to the vets that while you understand their need to do things this way, the time taken is excessive, especially when you are having to pay for the service.

I have to pay for prescriptions as the medication is close to £250 through the vets or under £80 online so I have to deal with posting off the prescriptions each time which is a pain.

Ours said people would try to use the same prescription on multiple sites to then get more of the medication and sometimes would then try to sell that excess on. They would be caught but it would still cause a pain for the vets, so ours changed to paper prescription that has to be sent by post to be used.

I was just coming here to see if there's anything about prescriptions. My vet has emailed a prescription to me but I'm not sure where to get it filled. I've never had a separate prescription for my cat before, it's always been done "in vet". Any suggestions for online vet pharmacy gratefully received.

@Davros I'm using Viovet. There website is easy to navigate and they have a separate section, once you've placed your order, to upload the prescription

We use petdrugsonline but we found them by searching for the medicine we needed and finding a reasonably priced one. There will be a few options, so might be worth searching for the medicine you need and seeing what comes up.

Not normal at all! I get an electronic prescription emailed to me same day so I can upload myself

As a matter of interest, does the vet chose the on line pharmacy or do you select one?
