Pooing outside the tray

My 7 month old poos next to the tray. She has never mastered covering her poo but now (for about a month) she goes just next to it on the carpet. She wees in the tray.
Does anyone have any idea why? Im wondering if I should try a different litter. We currently use the natural wood pellet stuff. Do they get fussy about litter?!

You could try different litter.
Some cats are just a bit dopey with litter trays. I had one who would spend ages fastidiously digging a hole in the corner only to stand in the hole, park her bum over the edge and poo on the floor. Then look really surprised when she noticed that the poo was in the floor. Followed by much scratching as she filled in the hole
More surprise at the poo on the floor and then walk away.

Thankyou! She is a bit thick 😂

Maybe she's a bit fussy and she and doesn't want to poo where she weed. Maybe try a bigger tray, so she could have separate ends?

Could you try a covered tray so it's impossible to miss? Lots on Amazon.

Ours poo’s in her tray 40% of the time. She otherwise uses the matt flooring by front door.

She won’t poo and wee in same tray. But we always clean her tray immediately anyway.

She’s ten months and I’m hoping she’ll just gradually get it. We never tell her off.

I’d say try another litter and if you can have two trays then do that. And keep trays spotlessly clean.

I would try two trays as well as a softer litter. Lots of cats don't want to poo where they pee, and wood pellets can be quite rough on their paws.

Thanks all, i will get some different litter tomorrow.

Is she definitely pooing outside the tray? A few times, my cat's pooed in the tray then flicked it out when scratching around afterwards. She's also remarkably stupid.

We have this problem as well with one of our two. She's completely dim. Also nervy so probably not a great combination 🙈

She goes through phases and we are currently in the phase of pooing next to the tray again 🙄.

We've got three trays and we've tried different litters but I think she just doesn't like to poo where she wees and she's too stupid to walk a few feet away and use the other tray or go upstairs to the third tray.

Hopefully she'll get out of the habit again 🤞

I'd try an extra tray and maybe change the litter. I thought that might help with ours but she wouldn't touch the much finer corn litter at all and just stopped using that tray until we put wood pellets back in it, so just be careful.

Good luck!

Our one cat rarely poos in the litter tray. We have two litter trays and if they are clean she will wee in them but generally she poos next to a litter tray (clean or dirty). She has always been the same. Her new trick is to poo on the front door step.
