How do I stop worrying about my indoor cat?

Ok, I’m not sure whether this is a cat owner thing or a mental health thing.

Our cat was previously an outdoor cat, but after a new male moved in nearby he had something of a personality transplant and started beating up the neighbourhood cats. People freaked out, and we had to keep him in after someone threatened to poison him.

The problem is I cannot relax if I cannot see him. He wants out, so he will patrol the windows and doors and I’m constantly paranoid that someone could have opened one without me realising. When we first kept him in he peed on everything soft he could find, he’s gotten over that now. But I really struggle, when I can’t see him I worry that he’s found a way to get out, and I get too wound up about it to let him be.

He has a catio for outdoor access, which he can go in and out of through a cat flap, and if we need to keep him secure we can shut him in the room with that access.

Does anyone else feel similarly about their indoor cat?
