Not eating, advice please

Our lovely 8 month old kitten had a spell of sickness in Friday night.

No diarrhoea.

Very lethargic, hiding under furniture.

Not eating and drinking.

Took to vets Sunday and couldn't see anything obvious. Normal temp, no pain, no signs of dehydration. Tummy felt normal. Mouth looked normal.

Suggested offering plain food little and often.

Fast forward to today, less lethargic but still not right. Still hiding, not playing, not vocal, not eating but importantly, has had sips of water.

Is responding to cuddles and purring.

But I'm still worried as it's not normal.

Watch and wait as might just be feeling poorly after tummy bug or does he need further investigation??

You can buy convalescent/rehydration food from the vets or a larger pets at home store.

Lick-e-Lix tubes might also be an option.

Also tinned tuna in spring water or even salmon if that's affordable for you.

Thanks, I'll try both. He's just doesn't seem interested in eating currently. Hope he perks up soon 😞

It's such a worry when they do this. At least there's no diarrhoea as that would cause dehydration and if he's still drinking then that's good. I'd return to the vets though if he doesn't start eating something in the next couple of days.

You could try gently heating up a pouch or a tin of salmon in the oven? The smell may stimulate her appetite.

Cat milk

Lick e Licks tubes

We eventually got our cat eating again with an antidepressant which is an appetite stimulant.

Yes, he's such a noisy, playful kitten so this is just making it more worrying.

He's just had a teaspoon amount of tinned tuna, hopefully that gives him a bit of a boost.

Have you tried to hand feed? Sometimes mine goes through stages of not eating from bowl/plate when he's been a bit stressed.
He's just come home from cattery and I hand fed for a couple of days now he's back to normal.

Seems interested in food today but just won't eat. Sniffs, licks lips and then wanders off. Still quiet and not himself.

Vets tomorrow...😞

I'm so sorry. They are a worry. Our little nightmare had this for a few days after being sick once. She did little licks of everything we put out for her. We ended up leaving her alone for a few hours and then boiling some chicken and then offering it to her while it was warm. She wolfed it down and then slowly her appetite went back to normal.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesn · 07/11/2024 12:36

So, he's had an anti sickness jab and had an appetite stimulant.

Still not eating.

Back tomorrow for further investigation if still the same. X-rays etc....

I am going through the same thing right now. My cat is a year old and has suddenly just stopped eating. Been this way since Thursday. Went to the vet yesterday who said everything looks fine with her, temp fine, tummy feels fine etc. last night she had a little nibble at some chicken and a few bites of her food but that’s it. Not eaten so far today either. Back to vets tomorrow for a scan I think
