My lovely boy has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. I switched his food and he has also been on can insulin twice a day. He has still been losing weight and is half the cat he used to be.

today his breath smells like acetone and he is wobbly in his back legs. I’m waiting for a call back from the vet but I think it might be time to complete the final act of kindness, I’m typing through tears. Does anyone have any advice/been in a similar situation? He still loves a cuddle but is really not himself, I’d say he seems depressed if that’s even a thing in cats. Is this the end? I’m heartbroken if so but I know I have to do what’s right for him. Why is this so hard?

Sounds like he might need more insulin.

It is really hard but so kind. I still cry over my cat who was PTS 8 years ago, but it was the right thing to do.

If this is the end remember cats live in the moment, someone once said better to be a day to early than doing it a day too late.

Give lots of love and fav food today.

Hugs 💙

Thanks both. He has been at the vet overnight on a drip and receiving a high dose of insulin. Spoke to the vet earlier and although he isn’t out of the woods yet he is responding well to treatment. I’m hopeful but realistic, really missing my boy already.

Sounds like he was in DKA?

How is your boy @HyggeTyggeDotCom

HyggeTyggeDotCom · 10/11/2024 23:46

Hiya, yes he was in DKA, and very poorly. Still not completely out of the woods until we can get his insulin right. He came home but then I had to take him back in the following day as his breathing was laboured. Potentially a reaction to being on a drip for so long apparently. He is home now and whilst weak he seems happier in himself and very cuddly again. Like he is saying Thankyou
