Older cat suddenly off colour

Okay. yes we have already booked in a vet visit for her for tomorrow but just wanting ideas support, etc.

Our beautiful Naughty Tortie is 21. She is in generally good health considering her age. She is tubby, slightly arthritic and is on Thyronorm with blood test monitoring every 3 months. Last test showed everything was ‘perfect’. The last few days she has been off colour. Her nose and gums are very very pale. She sleeps downstairs alone whereas usually she is glued to my 14 year old son’s side when awake or under his duvet with him when he is asleep. She’s lethargic and not eating. She ignores tinned tuna which is her fave. She has also started doing that meow/yowl that cats usually do when they have caught a mouse. We are keeping her warm and hydrated and have booked her in at the vets. But any prior ideas very gratefully received. She is adored beyond measure ( and like all good cats mostly tolerates us).

TIA

I am not an expert in any way but I wonder if she might be anaemic?

Handholding while you wait to hear. She sounds very much loved. Torties are wonderful.

Thanks. x ❤️ yes I am wondering. The last blood work we did we did the full bit. I was particularly concerned then with her kidneys and liver because she is so old. It was DS who brought my attention to the fact her gum and nose are now pale cream, not rosy pink. So we will flag anaemia. She is adored. We have only had her 2 years. Shes been rehomed 5 times by our local rescue because she is very very tricky. She used to just attack us. But cats tend to respond well to being adored 🤭😍 and DS1 is crazy about her and all she does is sit on us and pur and lick us. She’s so special and so so loved.

Wishing your dear little cat a speedy recovery.

Paws crossed for you 🐾

So a slight update. She has had full blood work and we wait for the results. She has a heart murmur and conjunctivitis and pain from arthritic hips. The obvious will be treated until the blood work comes back on Monday. In the meantime she has dreamies on tap and being carried up and down the stairs.

Wishing her all the best. I hope she’s enjoying the unlimited supply of Dreamies.

Thanks. Her blood came back with perfect results which the vet did marvel at considering her age. So we are assuming pain from arthritis and will start her on anti inflammatories and review in 2 weeks.

Wow just to say 21 is an incredible age OP! She sounds so loved hope she is on the mend.

OP is her heart murmur new? Did they mention doing a pro-BNP blood test or a heart scan?

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 07/11/2024 07:12

Hi @OdeToBarney The heart murmur we were told about last set of blood tests about 3 months ago. Nothing has been mentioned about a heart scan so I will mention it when we contact the vet next week. She started meloxaid 2 days ago and came upstairs under her own steam last night. DH has been spending all day in his study because that is where she has made her nest so he hangs out with her. TBF he's pretty ancient as well so the two older members of the family just chill together in front of the fire.

@Parry5timesbeforedeath heart scans are very expensive, so maybe ask for a pro-BNP blood test first. Our cat developed a new heart murmur a couple of years ago and was diagnosed with a heart condition last year. He's on meds and doing well, but it might be worth checking. Glad she's feel better today 💕

I was told that Mewler had a heart murmur when she was a kitten, she's 17 now and it's never been mentioned again! I think it's something vets pick up on but doesn't always need treatment. Best to check of course. Our biggest health problem so far has been diabetes and arthritis. I hope your puss turns out to be ok with a bit of extra carrying and keeping her company 🐾 💐
