Best flooring to stop cat weeing

Desperately trying to stop my cat weeing in the living room so am going to replace carpet with something else. Have been looking at vinyl, laminate, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) but what's the best to deter him? Thank you

My male cat went through a phase of weeing on the hall carpet...it was a nightmare!

I ended up changing the litter trays and the litter and buying an extra litter tray as well. We have two covered trays and one open and use tigerino powder litter which clumps.

You need to remove all residual smell from the floor which is very difficult.

Seems to have worked having an extra tray.

Yeah I suspect it's soaked into the underlay and concrete so I'm needing to rip up the carpet and replace the flooring I'm just trying to choose the best option to deter him from weeing on the new flooring.

Honestly, I don't think it makes any difference - yes, you can change the flooring but a cat who is peeing outside the tray is generally doing so because of a medical or behavioural issue - so you really need to tackle the cause of the problem as well, or you're just going to be in the same position again next year with the cat having ruined your new floors too.

Yep same strip of carpet. What hard plastic cover?

I'd try and stop the issue before you get new floor!!

Can he go out when he needs to? My cat wees on the floor in the basement when it's too wet for him to go outside, but we didn't want to reinstall a litter tray as it's a step back. Looks like we will have to. Thankfully basement is a concrete floor. So not carpet. Anything easy to clean would be better. Once it's new and clean smelling he should hopefully get out of going there. They always try and make a toilet 'area' unless it's territory marking in which case it's all up the furniture!

Why do you feel that providing a safe, dry, clean space for your cat to go to the toilet is taking a step back?

@coffeesaveslives because they always go outside, and have done since they were about three months old, so many years. I'm not saying people shouldn't provide a litter tray, it's just not the norm for my cats. But I'm going to reinstate it now to avoid accidents.
