My adult son acquired a stray cat whilst living here during Covid against my express wishes. I was gutted when they both moved out. I now have 2 Maine coons that my children all say I love more than them.

"I still don't like cats," says dh, "I only like our cat."

'Like' is a massive understatement.

Though 'our cat' became 'your cat' when he snarfled dh's cheese last night!

I don't like cats and would never have one as a pet or indoors properly. I do though feed several semi feral cats. They will come just inside the door if it is open and will let me stroke them a little. I am slightly scared of them whereas even mad dogs, I like.
I couldn't let the cats starve.

My parents have my ginger & white male living at theirs as he was bullying my female. He's their first & last cat. DM swears blind she tolerates him but rings me every day with a story about him & he's spoilt rotten! ...I swear it's the cat she never knew she wanted.

DH didn’t like cats but agreed to them for me and the kids.
Cats have been with us 3 weeks. He ignored them at first until Cat 1 started showing curiosity about this mysterious human who wasn’t fawning over them every minute. This weekend I have overheard him calling her “my love” twice, complimenting her on her eyes, and trying to encourage her to sit on his lap.

I used to think all cats were the same. I was raised by a cat hater and only had dogs until very recently. I now have two cats and know better! Cats are wonderful. Dogs are wonderful. They are all little individuals.

This had me laughing out loud

I was always a bit wary just as I had grown up with dogs and didn't really know much about them
Then a neighbours noisy persistent Birman decided I was going to be a cat person and started letting himself into my house
Next a feral cat fell asleep on my lap and cats started gravitating towards me

I gave in and adopted a cat, it was the only answer

Now I have a cat and a visiting not my cat (he's been visiting since 2019 now)

I can stand outside and yell "KITTENS" and my neighbours cats come sprinting to me. Meanwhile he's shaking treats and being ignored Grin

buffyfaithspike · 22/10/2024 00:45

Oh and my dad was absolutely not a cat person until I got the cat I have now, who acts like and is the size of a dog
He comes in and ignores me and looks for the cat but still insists "I don't like cats. Anyway here's some ham for him" Hmm

nocoolnamesleft · 22/10/2024 00:56

My dad hated cats. Then a cat decided to adopt them. In the space of less than 6 months he went from scattering cat pepper round the garden to lying on the floor proffering prawns.

sashh · 22/10/2024 02:09

If I'm feeling down I type, "men who didn't want the damned cat" into YouTube for numerous pictures of people who hated cats now tucking them up in bed, or building them a bed or just being besotted by cats.

hilariousnamehere · 22/10/2024 02:13

Oh this is the thread I needed after an awful few days!

I was a dog and horse person, didn't dislike cats but just didn't really know any. And then I tried to adopt a pair of greyhounds and somehow came home with a pair of six month old rescue kittens instead (turns out the wise woman at the greyhound rescue was absolutely correct) and have been besotted with them ever since.

Still love dogs and horses but will now always be a cat person first - they are the most amazing little creatures and so much more cuddly and loving than I'd been led to believe!

They won over my parents very quickly too 🐾

My friend didn’t like cats. For most of the 25 years I’ve known her she didn’t like cats.

Then she met the love of her life, who had cats. Two beautiful tabbies. She really wanted to live with her but wasn’t sure about them. She decided to see how it went.

Five years on she loves the cats as much as her wife does.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/10/2024 10:43

I persuaded my friend to have a cat. He was adamant that he wasn't going. He's got two. He's besotted with them. When I made a comment about Zena looking like a barrel. He did not like it. 🤣🤣🤣

mumisfull · 22/10/2024 10:55

I used to think cats were evil but my son desperately wanted a pet and was allergic to dogs. So we got the cat, then another one. Now I turf my kids out of chairs so the cats can sleep on 'their' sofa

seashaken · 22/10/2024 14:00

I was never a fan of cats, didn't actively dislike them but didn't find them cute or interesting and couldn't understand why anyone would want one. Then my adult son adopted a rescue moggy during lockdown. I'm now setting aside a portion of the roast and calling myself Grandma.
