Food to prevent constipation

Some regular lurkers may remember the gorgeous Reg who we rescued a year ago. He’d had a rough life shut in a dark room by an old lady for 5 years, with a wonky foot and no one wanted to rehome him. He’s come on leaps and bounds since we’ve had him and while he’s still skittish, he’s a brave boy and we all love having him here.

He had to go to the vets today and go under to have some serious constipation fixed, and while there they found that his pelvis has obviously been badly smashed at some point and left to heal on its own, so it’s healed very badly and he has an incredibly narrow pelvis. We agreed that before this constipation he has a good quality of life and doesn’t show any pain, but also that if it keeps happening then we may have to consider his quality off life. So obviously we don’t want it to happen again.

We’ve been sent home with wet ProPlan gastrointestinal food, but can anyone recommend a good dry food too as he likes to graze during the day when people are at work? I’ve also ordered a water fountain to encourage him to drink plenty. He’s lost .4kg being constipated so I want him to get the weight back on as soon as possible.

Oh poor Reg! What a cutie pie.
Our boy got hit by a car a few years ago where his pelvic canal was smashed and now has a kink in it that causes constipation. We feed him Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Fibre Response which he loves. We're also on a twice daily regimen of 2 to 5 mm of lactulose and a half-tablet of cisapryde but that is a more recent intervention. He has the early signs of mega-colon so we're trying everything to keep him regular for as long as possible.

It's like having a baby again since our conversations revolve around his poo much of the time😁.
