Microchip cat flap not letting cat in

Our sureflap microchip catflap is no longer letting our cat in. We've replaced the batteries, and it's still not working. Usually it makes a clicking noise when our cat puts her head in it to come in, but it's not doing that now. Has anyone experienced this before?
We're unsure if it's a problem with the catflap, or with the cat's microchip. It's worked for 7 years and no issues. Debating if we get a new catflap or take the cat to a vet to check the microchip is still in the right place. Would really appreciate any thoughts (poor cat was locked out all of yesterday in the rain!).

I’ve got a sureflap and have been caught out by this before. If you replace the batteries without pressing anything then it’s fine. If you press the little button to the right whilst the cover is off it resets the memory so you need to get it to recognise your cats chip again. I’ll try and take a picture.

I don’t know how to link but if you google ‘sure flap battery change’ it runs you through all the possibilities.
I was very impatient and didn’t google before reacting to the flashing light 😂 I then had to spend a lot of time googling how to fix it!

Ski37 · 09/09/2024 13:45

Although just seen you’ve had it for 7 years so I’m assuming you’ve dealt with this before……..

Ilovemyshed · 09/09/2024 13:48

Have you had the chip checked by the vet to make sure it is still reading? They do move so its perfectly possible its worked its way to a more difficult position for the flap to pick it up.

SharpWriter · 09/09/2024 13:52

This happened to me (i thought it might be the cat's chip, but it wasn't) - if you Google it there will be ideas/instructions on how to fix the cat flap. I had to take it off the wall and reset a couple of things but it wasn't too difficult.

Sureflap are very responsive to even years out of warranty requests, give them a shout. We got a replacement catflap when ours stopped activating at about five years old, but we could tell it was the flap thing not the cat chip because we have three cats set up on it

PercyPhelps · 09/09/2024 13:55

Have you given the sensor bit a good clean?

I will check this when I get home again, will try to post her through the catflap to be rescanned 😂

Thanks for all the ideas. Will try them out when I get home later - hopefully it's something easy to fix!

All sorted now - managed to reprogram the catflap by posting the cat through - she was not impressed!

@Ditsy79 glad it’s sorted now. My cat was also unimpressed when I had to post him through the cat flap to reprogram it 🤣

RandomMess · 11/09/2024 19:54

😆

Mikunia · 11/09/2024 19:55

We are having similar issues but not quite the same. Our flap clicks but won't actually open unless the cat is really close to the window, which he won't do because he lives to push it with his paws not his nose. It's only just started doing this though.

RandomMess · 11/09/2024 20:05

Have you given the whole cat flap a good clean?

That sticker bit gets grubby.

Also chips can migrate.

Yep ours get it quite grubby and ant accumulated hair stops it opening

I bought OH (who cleans it) a spare fob as he was having to push the cat through to open the flap to clean

Ski37 · 11/09/2024 20:14

@RandomMess I agree with this! My photo up thread shows how grubby they can get and this was the bit under the cover!!
I gave it a good clean after seeing it 🤣

Oldraver · 13/09/2024 12:33

If you want to clean the flap without traumatizing the cat gets one of these
